Henry Thomas (Tom) Potter Jr. of Hallandale Beach, Florida passed away on November 16, 2013 at the age of 88, following a brief illness. Mr. Potter was born on October 6, 1925 in Olean, New York. His Parents were Henry Thomas Potter Sr. (Bennett, Colorado) and Helen LaStrange Potter (Olean, New York). He was also predeceased by his brother the late David Potter (late Mary Louise) Buffalo, NY. He was married to the late Norma M. (Olson) Potter at St. Mary's of the Angel's Church in Olean, New York on June 11, 1946. Henry Thomas (Tom) Potter Jr. of Hallandale Beach, Florida passed away on November 16, 2013 at the age of 88, following a brief illness. Mr. Potter was born on October 6, 1925 in Olean, New York. His Parents were Henry Thomas Potter Sr. (Bennett, Colorado) and Helen LaStrange Potter (Olean, New York). He was also predeceased by his brother the late David Potter (late Mary Louise) Buffalo, NY.
He was married to the late Norma M. (Olson) Potter at St. Mary's of the Angel's Church in Olean, New York on June 11, 1946. They were married for almost 43 years until she passed away on May 25, 1989 in Hollywood, Florida.
Tom Joined the U.S. Navy after Pearl Harbor was destroyed. He trained at Brisbane, Australia to join Special Forces. He participated in Operation Swordfish which involved setting up radio communications for the Army in the Asiatic-Pacific Theater including Hollandia, New Guinea and Leyte Gulf, Philippines. He was wounded in action and received the Purple Heart among several other Military Medals.
For 25 years he worked at the Castle Restaurant in Allegany, New York. In 1973 he moved to Hallandale Beach, Florida. He was a Chef for 17 years at the Diplomat Hotel in Hollywood, Florida.
He was awarded the Wal-Mart "Hero Award" in Bentonville, Arkansas due to him breaking up a robbery attempt.
Tom had a wonderful sense of humor, loved to laugh and had a beautiful singing voice. He enjoyed the outdoors, the forest, the beach, all types of airplanes; all sports particularly NFL Football, Classic TV shows and movies and all animals. He loved Big Band music and was a great dancer. Tom liked to travel and regularly made trips to visit family in various parts of the U.S. He was very proud of his military service in World War II. He regularly attended St. Matthew's Catholic Church in Hallandale Beach, Florida.
Survivors include two sons, Gerry Potter (Sharon) of Auburn, Alabama, Rick Potter (John Heckman) of Houston, Texas; one granddaughter, Melanie Potter Ward (Dr. Ben) Ward of Auburn, Alabama; two great grandchildren, Colin Benjamin Ward and Mary Kensington Ward of Auburn, Alabama.
Surviving sisters are Jackie Kennedy (Frank) Williamsville, NY; Frances Busse (late Ernest) Buffalo, NY and Nadine Verra (late John) Schnectady, NY and a host of cousins, nieces, nephews, grandnieces, grandnephews and many wonderful friends.
Visitation will be at Perna Dengler Roberts Funeral Home at 1306 Hertel Avenue in Buffalo, New York on Thursday, November 21, 2013 from 4pm-8pm. A Funeral Mass will be held at Holy Spirit Roman Catholic Church 91 Dakota Avenue, Buffalo, New York on Friday, November 22, 2013 at 9am; followed with burial at St. Bonaventure Cemetery in Allegany, New York at 1:30 pm
