Obituary from the Cleveland Plain Dealer

CLEVELAND, Ohio -- Henry B. "Bud" Ungar of Pepper Pike, who built one of the largest stores in Ohio during a long career in the shoe business while establishing himself as a community leader, died Tuesday after an illness. He was 81.

A native of Toledo, Ungar moved to Cleveland in 1957 with his wife, Marcia Lou, to be near her sister, according to their son Daniel. Drawing on his experience in the shoe business, starting at age 14, and on the difficulty of fitting his wife's narrow feet, he decided to start a store specializing in hard-to-find sizes.

"I didn't have any money then," he told a reporter years later, "but I was optimistic because I knew there was a market."

Mar-Lou Shoes, named for Marcia, opened in 1958 in the Arcade and spent 40 years downtown. It had outlets in Richmond Heights, Cleveland Heights and Randall Park Mall before its current location in Lyndhurst.

Ungar joined the Army after graduating from Toledo Scott High School during the Korean War, achieving the rank of second lieutenant. Active in civic affairs and volunteer work, he served for eight years as a councilman in South Euclid, including two years as council president. He was earlier the city's director of public safety and chairman of the South Euclid Community Development Corporation.

He served in recent years as a reading tutor for inner-city youth through the public education initiative of the Jewish Community Federation. An avid outdoorsman, he was an active member of the Ashtabula Rod and Gun Club and involved with Therapy Dogs International.

Survivors, in addition to his wife, are a daughter, Edie Ungar-Shafron; sons Michael and Daniel, and seven grandchildren.

Services were Friday at Temple Tifereth Israel in Beachwood. Berkowitz-Kumin-Bookatz handled arrangements.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Abe and Bertha Kipperman Aquatic Fund at Menorah Park, 27100 Cedar Road, Beachwood, Ohio 44122; the Temple Tifereth Israel, 26000 Shaker Blvd., Beachwood 44122, or the Harry R. Horvitz Palliative Care Unit at the Cleveland Clinic, 9500 Euclid Ave., Cleveland 44195. Online condolences at dignitymemorial.com.
