Herbert Baker Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Oct. 22, 2013.

Herbert was born on October 5, 1918 in Clay County, Kentucky in the Crane Creek area; he passed away October 20, 2013, In Prineville, Oregon. He was one of ten children. Part of his family history can be seen in the History channel in the documentary on the feuds of the Bakers, Howards and the Whites in Kentucky. Because of his family's trade in the moonshine business, he worked in a legal distillery in Kentucky as their proof tester.
His Mother was honored in Phoenix, AZ with a star pin for her six sons and one grandson in World War II (the grandson was killed at Pearl Harbor. All six of her sons survived the war).
Herbert served in the Army in the Aleutians and fought in the last battle of the islands to defeat the Japanese. After that he was sent to the Philippines and fought and remained there until the end of the war. After the war in 1945 he married his "love at first sight" Betty Wallis Baker. During his life he and his wife Betty were successful business people running service stations, auto mechanic garages and a U-Haul dealership throughout his life. They lived in several states because Herbert had the wanderlust, but in their later years they retired to Oregon to be with their daughter and her family.
He lived the last 7 years in Prineville where he was active in the Senior Center. He was a member of the American Legion, The Veterans of Foreign Wars, the Loyal Order of the Moose and Band of Brothers.
He loved people, working on cars, being with family, travel, and his own special "sugar" free cornbread.
He was preceded in death by his parents Flora Ball Baker and Robert Lee Baker of Kentucky, his son Allen Lee Baker (died in infancy) and his other 9 siblings.
He is survived by his daughter Connie, son-in-law Russ Hanson of Prineville, his granddaughter Keely Hansen of Redmond and quite a number of nieces and nephews and his friend and helper Opal Moore of Michigan.
There will be a memorial service for Herbert on Thursday, October 31 at 1:30PM at Prineville Funeral Home 199 NE 10th St Prineville, Oregon. An inurnment is scheduled for Tuesday, November 5 at 1:30PM at Willamette National Cemetery 11800 SE Mt Scott Blvd Portland, Oregon.
