Herbert Webster Ball, Sr., 94, of Surry died Sunday evening, August 24, 2014 at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston following a brief illness.

He was born on October 17, 1919, in Keene, the son of Ernest W. and Victoria (Webster) Ball. He was one of 15 children and lived in Surry his entire life.

Mr. Ball served in the US Marines during World War II in the Pacific Rim and was present for the raising of the Flag at Iwo Jima.

He drove his own dump truck for a number of years before going to work at Markem Corp. He retired as an inspector after working there for over 30 years.

Mr. Ball served as part of the Surry Volunteer Fire Department and organized the Surry Junior Fire Department earlier in his life.

He enjoyed dancing at the Elk Hall in Winchester. He also was active in the racing community and was a "Hall of Famer" at the then Claremont Speedway. He was known as the "unofficial" crew chief of his son Rusty Ball's racing team.

His family remembers him as being a frugal man that had great patience when working on repairs. Whenever friends visited his garage, they could always count on being offered a cup of coffee.

Mr. Ball is survived by his three children Herbert Ball Jr., and wife Ann, of Keene, Marilyn Conley, and husband David, of Marlow and Bruce Ball, and wife Kristine, of Keene; his eight grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren; his siblings Elizabeth Ball of Elmira, NY, Ruth Ball of Keene, Lois Porter of Keene, Patricia Faria of Keene; Edith Hasbrouck of Gilsum, Judy Currier of Winchendon, MA, Gertrude Haynes of Swanzey, Shirley Dunton of Seville, FL, Gerry Witoshynsky of Pembroke Pines, FL, William Ball of Cranston, RI and Samuel Ball of Farmington, CT; many nieces, nephews, grand nieces and grand nephews. His wife Alice Ball, siblings Weston Ball, Sarah Ball and John Ball all died earlier.

Services for Mr. Ball will be held on Tuesday, September 2, 2014, 11:00 AM at Beth-El Bible Church, 13 Village Road, in Surry, NH. An hour of visitation will be held an hour before, from 10:00 AM – 11:00 AM. Fletcher Funeral Home & Cremation Services, 33 Marlboro St., Keene, NH have been entrusted with the arrangements.
