November 2, 1939-August 3, 2011

H. Arthur Sandman, age 71, passed away on August 3, 2011. The only child of David and Madeline B. Sandman, Arthur was born and raised in Asheville, NC. A lifelong sports fan, Arthur especially loved watching and attending UNC football and basketball games. Also, as a young boy he listened to the St. Louis Cardinals baseball games on AM station KMOX, and spent his later years traveling to stadiums around the country following the Cardinals. Active as a young man in BBYO, Arthur was the President of AZA for the State of North Carolina. While in high school, Arthur met Elaine Elden of New Bern, NC, whom he wed in 1960, was married to for 33 years, and with whom he always continued a warm personal friendship. Together, they raised four children: Michael, Barry, Dana and Andrew. Never shy about playing favorites, Dana, his only daughter, could always make him smile and show his rare softer side. Arthur graduated from UNC-Chapel Hill and UNC-Chapel Hill School of Law where he was a member of the Law Review and Order of the Coif. Following law school he began his career as a CPA with Ernst & Ernst in Washington, DC while earning a Masters of Law in Taxation from Georgetown University. Moving to Raleigh in 1965, Arthur began a long and varied career. He was a professor of business law and accounting at N.C. State University, the founder of DJ's Bookstores, DJ's Textbooks and The Deli-King delicatessen among many other business ventures. Throughout, Arthur maintained a business and real estate law practice. In business, Arthur will, no doubt, be best remembered for his development and investments in local and regional real estate. With the support of wonderful partners and investors, Arthur involved himself in the development and management of dozens of projects ranging from residential subdivisions, retail plazas, hotels, apartments and office buildings. He never used a computer to analyze a project, always relying simply on a legal pad, an adding machine and a thoughtful, if not intuitive, understanding of location, timing and value. Outside of business, Arthur was a faithful member of and leader in Raleigh's Jewish community, serving as a President and later lifetime Trustee of Temple Beth Or. But, it was to his family that he was truly devoted. A dedicated father in every sense, father-in-law, grandfather, teacher and role model to Michael and Lisa Sandman, Barry Sandman and Karen Blazeff, Dana and Scott Gorelick, Andrew and Jennifer Sandman, and his eight grandchildren: Ryan, Zachary, Marshall, Elyssa, Madeline, Braxton, Tate and Harper. To us all, we will miss but never forget his ready opinions, moodiness, love, incredible generosity and spirit for life. Arthur was incredibly blessed to have yet another, remarkably special and important love in his life, Carolyn McCain. Together they happily shared many years of travel, sports, good food and most importantly, each other's company. Arthur's love of Carolyn and her love and care for him, no doubt, added the strength and inspiration for more life than his family and doctors ever imagined possible. The entire family extends a warm thank you to the many special individuals who were involved with delivering extraordinary and compassionate care to Arthur throughout his courageous battle with cancer. A memorial service will be held at Temple Beth Or, 5315 Creedmoor Road, Raleigh, NC on Friday, August 5th at 11:00 and will be followed by a graveside service at Raleigh Hebrew Cemetery, 450 N. State Street, Raleigh, NC. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Temple Beth Or Sandman Family Endowment, 5315 Creedmoor Road, Raleigh, NC 27612, Hospice of Wake County, 250 Hospice Circle, Raleigh, NC 27607 or Rex Cancer Center, 2500 Blue Ridge Road, Suite 325, Raleigh, NC 27607.
