SOUTH WELLFLEET - Herbert S. Wyer, 80, died peacefully in his home surrounded by his family after a brief illness. He was born in Harford, Ct and graduated from Bulkeley High School in 1950. He served three years in the US Marine Corp. during the Korean Conflict. Herb married Jacqueline French in 1955 and together they raised four daughters in Wethersfield, CT. He was a member of the International Association of Heat & Frost Insulators and Asbestos Workers of America, Local 33 for 42 years and retired in 1993.
After the passing of his first wife, Herb married Denise Rice and they moved to Wellfleet, MA in 1996. Herb enjoyed fishing, boating and golfing. He was an avid fan of UConn basketball and also a member of Chequessett Yacht and Country Club. He was a skilled craftsman and woodworker who built everything from fine furniture to a wooden canoe. His motto was "Measure twice, cut once." He worked as a carpenter in Wellfleet until last summer. Herb was a kind and gentle soul who never had a bad word to say about anyone.
He is survived by his wife, Denise, his daughters and their husbands, Terry and Brian Dehm of Simsbury, CT, Kathy and Bill O'Keefe of Cromwell, CT, and Carol and Paul Fitzsimmons of Southport, CT. He is also survived by his grandchildren; Jason, Kevin, and Ryan Dehm, Mike and Matt O'Keefe, Jennifer, Carolyn, and Doug Crosen, and Andrew and Emma Fitzsimmons. He leaves four stepchildren and their spouses; William and Michelle Rice, Tim and Tina Rice, Michael and Heidi Rice, and Catherine and Doug Gallo. He also leaves 15 step grandchildren, his brother-in-law, Arthur Hamel and his sons, and many dear friends. He was predeceased by his first wife Jackie, daughter Patty Crosen, and sister Barbara Hamel.
Friends may call on Friday, May 17 from 4-7 at Nickerson Funeral Home on Main Street in Wellfleet. A Mass of Christian burial will be held at Our Lady of Lourdes on Route 6 in Wellfleet on Saturday, May 18th at 11:30am. Burial will be private. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Logan Dunne Scholarship Fund c/o Nauset Regional High School, 78 Eldredge Parkway, Orleans MA 02653 or Hope Health Hospice, 765 Attucks Ln, Hyannis MA 02601.

Herb was always there to help. As an example, when we would arrive for a visit, he would quickly come out to the car and take all of our luggage into the house.It was those little things that Herb would do that meant so much. But most of all, he loved and cared for my sister Denise which we were so happy to see. Thank you Herb for all you did and we will miss you.
