GREENSBORO - Herman Winfree, age 90, went home to be with the Lord on January 14. He was born in rural Guilford County, NC and is survived by his wife, Erline, to whom he was married for 65 years. Herman was a WWII veteran who served in the Army Air Corp in the Pacific theater. He was proud of his service and loved his country. After serving his country, he used the GI Bill to receive an education. He received a degree in history from High Point College, and attended law school in Chapel Hill and Asheville. He practiced law in Greensboro for 52 years, retiring at the age of 82. Having grown up on a farm, Herman loved the outdoors and gardening, but loved even more so sharing the fruits of his labor with his friends and family. He was happiest when giving to others, which he did often. Herman was a volunteer fireman for many years and volunteered for Meals on Wheels after his retirement. He never met a stranger. He was an honest man and a devoted husband, father, and friend.
