Herschel V. (Hank) Green, a visionary real estate developer and community leader, passed away after a long illness on Jan 14, 2013. He was born in Detroit, Michigan on October 10, 1922 and moved to South Florida after serving in the United States Naval Air Reserve Force as a Lieutenant Junior Grade in World War II. He graduated from the University of Texas with a degree in Business Administration. It was in Miami that he discovered what would be his loves and lifelong passion, family and career. He lived a fulfilling life through hard work, sound judgment, determination, and integrity.
Hank met his life partner of 60 years, Nancy, after building her family's home, and together they had a beautiful family, Elizabeth (Hugh Bernstein), Robert (Roberta Taranto), Carolynn (Michael Friedman), Susann (Arnold Mittelman), and Florence (Mark Rivlin), and his nine grandchildren, Brian and James Bernstein; Jenny, Spencer and Alexandra Friedman; Scott and Jake Rivlin; Tyler Mittelman; and Isabella Taranto.
Mr. Green founded and was Chairman of The Green Companies, a real estate development company in South Florida. He began as a homebuilder in 1948, and later built and developed commercial real estate. He is most known for his vision of Dadeland area as a center for business, with the development of Dadeland Towers, Dadeland Center, and Datran Center.
He was passionate about Miami and championed many community organizations, some of which included Chairman of the Greater Miami Chamber of Commerce, Chairman of the Greater Miami Free Trade Zone, Board Member of The Performing Arts Center, President of Royal Palm Tennis Club, and other civic organizations.
He was also involved in the building industry at the local, state and national level. In his industry he was recognized and received the Builder of the Year award from the Builders Association of South Florida and from the Florida Builders Association. He also served as President of both organizations, and was inducted into their Halls of Fame. He was also inducted in the National Association of Home Builders Hall of Fame.
He will be deeply missed by his family, as well as those he touched with his smile and words of wisdom. The family wants to thank our extended family at Miami Jewish Health Systems and in particular his extraordinary care givers, Marie Louis and Carline Augustin, for whom we will be forever grateful.
There will be a private burial. A memorial service will be held at 12:00 on Friday, January 18, 2013 at Temple Beth Am, 5950 North Kendall Drive, Miami, Fl., 33156. The family suggests contributions be made in Herschel's memory to the charity of your choice.
