Funeral service for Herschel Howard Owen, 80, will be Monday, November 19, 2012, at 1 p.m. at the Mass of the Ressurection at the Annunciation for the Lord Catholic Church with Father Ray Remke officiating and Roselawn Funeral Home directing. Burial will follow at Roselawn Cemetery. The body will be at the church for viewing one hour prior to the service.
Mr. Owen, who died on Friday, November 16, 2012, at his residence, was born on June 30, 1932, in Lawrence County to Eldgin and Addie Lemay Owen (deceased). During his early school years in Hazlewood High School, Herschel participated in varsity football, and basketball. He graduated in 1951 continuing his education at Athens College where he excelled in basketball as team captain. In 1956, he graduated with a Bachelor of Arts and later completed manage-ment and communica-tions at University of Alabama in Huntsville. Hershel was an avid golfer and bowler, accumulating 25 awards. He was an excellent cook and loved the art of wood working. He was a sales-man and a supervisor at Servomation. After his retirement, he worked at Lucky's Grocery Store in Decatur until his illness.
He was preceded in death by his son, Jonathan Brents Owen; sister, Muriel Cash; and brother, Cecil Owen.
He is survived by his son, David H. Owen and daughter-in-law, Valerie J. Owen, both of Spring Hill, Tennessee; a very loving companion, Alline Blansett of Hunt-sville; two brothers, Clarence Owen and James Edward, both of Decatur; three sisters, Elese Griffin of Florence, Elizabeth Keel of Moulton, and Hellen Bowers of Athens; two grandchildren, Lauren Owen of Athens and Chase Owen of Decatur; and a host of loving nieces, nephews, and friends.

My sympathies to all the family. Herschel was dear man. When we had family gatherings, he was always so much fun to be around. He had a wonderful sense of humor. He has now joined my beloved husband, Cecil, and I can just see them joking and laughing.
