Howard Coy Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Feb. 12, 2013.

Howard L. Coy, 86, of Fort Wayne, passed away Monday, February 11, 2013 at his residence with his loving daughter by his side. Howard was born on December 23, 1926 in Scotia, California, the son of Harry D. and Mildred (Heinbach) Coy. He met Rita Perkins in Oakland, California on February 5, 1950 and followed her back to Fort Wayne, IN where they were married on November 3, 1951 in Saint Patrick's Catholic Church. Howard was a Korean War Veteran and served as a Sergeant in the US Army from 1952- 1960. He loved Ford automobiles, and owned his own auto repair shop in Berkley, California before coming to Indiana. He was appointed to the Ivy Tech Advisory Committee as a member of the Automotive Technology Department in 1974 and continued to work in the automobile repair business as a Service Manager/Shop Foreman until he retired from Allen County Motors in 1988. A lifelong fan of music, Howard liked to entertain his family and friends by playing the guitar, harmonica and singing old songs and ballads. He was an avid reader and loved reading about history. He lived an excitement filled life and traveled frequently. He liked to entertain everyone with stories of his adventures and misadventures. He enjoyed being surrounded by his children and grandchildren and was always happy to see them. His family was always first in his mind and his heart. His laugh, his whistling, his voice and his sense of humor will be missed by everyone who knew him. He looked for the best in people and was always willing to help others. Howard touched the hearts and souls of many people. Those that were closest to him are better for having known him. His smile and warmth will be deeply missed. Surviving are his daughter Dolores (Lori) Silvers; sons, Gordon L., Thomas A. (Kelle), and Paul R. (Lisa) Coy; sisters, Bernice Coveleski of El Segundo, CA, Barbara (Robert) McMilan of Livermore, CA, and Harriet (Babe) Birkhofer of Guerneville, Ca; seven grandchildren, Christopher (Michelle) Vance, Ian (Brandie) Vance, Nicole (Christopher) Abbott, Stephanie Hood, Joshua Coy, Mason Coy, and Shayna Coy; two step-grandchildren, Brian (Krista) Diehl, and Katie Diehl; thirteen great grandchildren and one step-great grandchild. He was preceded in death by his wife, Rita in 1993, his son Steven in 1977, his parents Harry and Mildred, and three brothers, Donald, Clyde and Wayne Coy. A funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m., Friday, February 15, 2013 at Elzey Patterson Rodak Home For Funerals, 6810 Old Trail Rd., Ft. Wayne with one hour of calling before. Visitation will also be from 3:00 – 7:00 p.m. on Thursday, February 14, 2013 at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to American Red Cross, Ft. Wayne Chapter or Heartland Hospice. Dear Dad,
Thank you for continuously watching over me and protecting me from Heaven above. I know it was you who stopped me from rushing into harms way a while back. I told the story to Mary Ellen and she said "Your daddy was watching over you" There was never a doubt that divine intervention played a role. I am loving you and missing you every day. Until we meet again...Love, Dolores

Mason,
That was an awesome story!! I believe dad is still with us too. Last week a voice whispered in my ear "check your oil" I had Gordon check it and it was bone dry!!! I knew it was dad! Dad always took care of my cars when he was here and he is still taking care of them in the afterlife. Also, the lights in dads "man cave" always flicker when I am down there.I get such an overwhelming presence of him, I just want to cry. Thank you dad for being my Guardian Angel. I love you and I miss you.

Hey grandpa! Thanks for showing yourself to me today I love you!

I want to share what happened with everybody who reads this and it might not make sense with the tech lingo but here goes. A couple of weeks ago I thought about visiting grandpa registry (this site) and the thought went in and out of my head many times, but never got around to it. Then today I went to kill the open pages on my phone and the FIRST page was his registry page!! I make a habit of killing pages many times a day so it shouldn't have been there, but it was. Make of it what you want, but I have and continue to believe he still presents himself in our lives. I honestly find it funny because grandpa would always ask me to help him with technical stuff whenever I was over at his house. Just a friendly, "I still got it," type thing. He's such a wonderful man. Small subtle things can make a world of difference.

What I remember about Uncle Howard was his sense of humor and story telling and the kind and gentle soul he was. Always ready with a hug and a smile. I miss him dearly. I remember his voice often and his smile. It is strange to live life now without the comfort of knowing he is a phone call away. I wish I would have called more often now. Rest in peace Uncle Howard.

When my Uncle Howard was dating my Aunt Rita, he would stop over in the evenings to spend some time with Kathy and I and visit Dad and Mom. I think my Aunt Rita worked a part time evening job. Whenever he had some free time,he would come over and play with Kathy and I(we really loved him).I always enjoyed his kind, sweet nature and his loving ways.I talked to him about a week ago and he was as sweet as always.I am so lucky that he was a part of my childhood and my life.He will truly be missed...Thank you for being who you were-Love Always, Mary Ellen

Between sadness and fond memories, I've cried and smiled a lot this week thinking of my grandpa. A few months ago I had the rare privilege of telling him exactly how much he's meant to me throughout my life. I know he knew how much I loved him and it's a very comforting thought. I'll never forget how he squeezed my hand, looked at me and said "We've had a good run, you and I." Thank you grandpa for investing so much into me. I told you before that whatever I am, I owe to you. I just pray I'll always make you proud. I'll miss you every day until I see you again in heaven.
