Howard Kenneth Cushwa, Sr. Howard Kenneth Cushwa, Sr., 93 of Falling Waters, WV, passed away at his home on October 23, 2013. Born on September 25, 1920 in Martinsburg, WV; he was the son of the late Otha Howard and Pearl Donaldson Cushwa. Ken graduated from Martinsburg High School in 1938 and joined the police force in 1943; however he had to take a leave of absence due to World War II. He became a marine serving the First Div. in Okinawa and was honorably discharged. After returning home, he continued his career with the police department and became interested in investigation. Howard Kenneth Cushwa, Sr., 93 of Falling Waters, WV, passed away at his home on October 23, 2013.
Born on September 25, 1920 in Martinsburg, WV; he was the son of the late Otha Howard and Pearl Donaldson Cushwa.
Ken graduated from Martinsburg High School in 1938 and joined the police force in 1943; however he had to take a leave of absence due to World War II. He became a marine serving the First Div. in Okinawa and was honorably discharged. After returning home, he continued his career with the police department and became interested in investigation. He attended the FBI National Police Academy specializing in fingerprinting and photography which led to the establishment of the first local police identification department in Northeastern West Virginia. Ken retired as Captain from the Police Department in 1966.
Ken worked for Hutzler Oil Company as Vice President and General Manager. He later started working for General Motors as a security guard. He purchased the FOP Club and ran it as the Potomac River Club until finally retiring in 1989.
He was an active member of the community helping to establish the Boys Club and coaching little league baseball. Ken was a Deacon at the First Presbyterian Church as well as Sunday School Superintendent and president of the Christian Endeavor.
Ken was an honorary member of the Rotary Club, member of the Lions Club, and life member of the Moose, Elks, VFW, FOP, and AM Vets clubs.
He is survived by 4 children; Howard Kenneth Cushwa Jr., Juanita Boarman, Eileen Simpson, and Deena Brown; brother; Harold Cushwa; 8 grandchildren; H.K Cushwa III, William B. Cushwa, Jenny Sutherland, William B. Stone, Bradley Boarman, Angelica Brown, Sam Simpson, and Manuel Simpson; and 12 great-grandchildren.
In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his wife of 73 years, Norma Cushwa; brother; Donald Cushwa; and 2 sisters; Evelyn Kitchen and Mildred Roberson.
Visitation will be held on Tuesday October 29th from 12-1 with funeral service at 1:00 at Rosedale Funeral Home. Interment will follow in Rosedale Cemetery.
Memorial contributions can be made on his behalf to Hospice or your favorite charity.
