Hugo Valentine Dzenis, 80, of Brielle, passed away on Tuesday, April 29, 2014 at Jersey Shore University Medical Center in Neptune. Born in Riga, Latvia, he was instrumental in bringing his mother and two brothers to the United States after first fleeing their home country from the approaching Soviet invasion, then later leaving Soviet-occupied eastern Germany in 1946. The family spent several years in displaced-persons camps in western Germany before arriving by ship to New York City in 1950.

Hugo graduated from Lakewood High School and went on to earn a B.A. in English from Monmouth College in West Long Branch in 1960. He was fluent in three languages: Latvian, German and English. He married Constance Ford Flynn in 1961, a widow of a war veteran with a 13-year old son. He grew his family with Connie and together they had four children. He entered into his career in public service which spanned nearly 40 years until his retirement in 1991 from the position of Bureau Chief for the Department of Human Services for the State of New Jersey in Trenton. Connie passed away in 1999, after he tenderly cared for her during a long battle with cancer. Hugo was then blessed to make the acquaintance of Laima Spielberg, also of Latvia, whom he married in 2001.

Deeply devoted to his family, Hugo was also an active church and community member. He was a parishioner of the Latvian Evangelical Lutheran Church of New Brunswick and Lakewood, New Jersey. He was an active member of the N.J. Latvian Society (Priedaine) in Freehold Twp., and the American Latvian Association.

For many years, with Connie, Hugo helped operate a mail-order country gourmet gift business known as Hill Hollow Farm in Brielle. He was an active volunteer at Historic Allaire Village and the Union Landing Historical Society in Brielle. He touched all who knew him with his kind disposition, generosity and perpetual readiness to lend a hand and he will be greatly missed.

Hugo is survived by his wife of 13 years, Laima of Brielle; a stepson Edward A. Flynn and his wife Susan of Arlington, VA; his daughters Elizabeth Dzenis Brzozowski and her husband David of Sebastian, FL and Victoria Dzenis of Seattle, WA; his sons, Hugo (Chip) Dzenis, Jr. and his wife Renee of Manasquan; and Michael Dzenis and his husband Joseph Koskuba of Jersey City; and his brother Bruno Dzenis of Manchester Township. He has six grandchildren: Patrick Flynn, Courtney Holcombe, Rebekah Stoker, Deborah Brzozowski, David Brzozowski, Eric Dzenis and Ethan Dzenis as well as four great-grandchildren. Also surviving are several nieces, nephews and extended family and friends both here and abroad in his home country..

Visitation will be on Saturday, May 3, 2014 from 9-11 am at the Neary-Quinn Funeral Home, 39 South Street, Manasquan, NJ. Funeral services will begin at 11 am at the funeral home. Interment will follow at St. Anne Cemetery in Wall Township.

In lieu of flowers, donations to the are encouraged.
