"Our citizenship is in heaven. And we eagerly await a Savior from there, the Lord Jesus Christ, who, by the power that enables Him to bring everything under His control, will transform our lowly bodies so that they will be like His glorious body. Therefore . . . stand firm in the Lord, dear friends!" (Philippians 3:20-4:1) Funeral service will be on Friday, March 28, 2014 at 11:00 am at Mt. Vernon Baptist Church, Raleigh, North Carolina. Funeral service will be on Friday, March 28, 2014 at 11:00 am at Mt. Vernon Baptist Church, Raleigh, North Carolina. There will be a time of visitation at 10:00 am at the church. Burial will follow at Old Mt. Vernon Cemetery.

Ilene Thornburg was born in the rural farming community of Carman, Illinois on June 1, 1928, to James and Catherine Johnson. Although predeceased by her brother, Everett, she continued to keep up with all the news and events at The Farm. Thank you to all the Johnson and Burrell family members for staying in touch with Auntie Ilene.

She attended Monmouth College where she met and married her college sweetheart, Bob Thornburg on August 21, 1948. They moved to Chicago Heights, Illinois and began to raise a family. Their first child, Lawrence, died in infancy. They went on to have two girls, Anne, who died in 1969; and Jane, who lives in Raleigh with her husband, Ross.

Her two granddaughters, Colleen and Emily brought great joy to her life. Despite her failing health, one of the highlights of her final years was attending Colleen's wedding to Matt Williams in 2011.

Bob and Ilene moved to Raleigh in 1980 and joined Mt. Vernon Baptist Church, where she served as part time piano accompanist and receptionist. Thank you to their faithful Sunday School class, who have remained steadfast in support. Both Mt. Vernon and Hayes Barton Baptist television ministries made it possible for them to continue worship from home.

Ilene helped Bob in his teaching positions at Wake Christian Academy and North Raleigh Christian Academy. Thank you Dr. Sherrill for maintaining your friendship.

Ilene also played a vital role in helping Bob obtain his masters degree and doctorate in theology, as she recorded all of his writing, along with numerous expositions.

Thank you to all the staff and friends at Atria Oakridge. Special thanks to all of the medical professionals who have cared for Ilene, including Dr. Conrad Flick, Drs Making Housecalls, Gentiva, Amedysis, Good Health Services, Rex Wound Clinic, Hospice of Wake County and Liberty Hospice.

Memorial contributions may be made to Mt. Vernon Baptist Church, Raleigh, North Carolina.

"There's a peace I've come to know
Though my heart and flesh may fail,
There's an anchor for my soul,
I can say, "It is well."

Jesus has overcome
And the grave is overwhelmed.
The victory is won
He is risen from the dead!

And I will rise when He calls my name,
No more sorrow, no more pain.
I will rise on eagles' wings
Before my God fall on my knees
And rise!"

(Chris Tomlin, Louie Giglio)
