Dr. Irving L. Samuels, esteemed pediatrician of Westchester County, New York, passed away January 1, 2013, at the age of 95, in Cutler Bay, Florida. Dr. Samuels was a beloved pediatrician who practiced in New Rochelle, N.Y. for over 40 years and was a loving husband and father. During a career that spanned over 40 years, Dr. Samuels tended to over 15,000 children and later treated many of his former patients' children. He was a pioneer in Westchester County in performing exchange transfusions for the treatment of newborns afflicted with RH incompatibility. Dr. Irving L. Samuels, esteemed pediatrician of Westchester County, New York, passed away January 1, 2013, at the age of 95, in Cutler Bay, Florida. Dr. Samuels was a beloved pediatrician who practiced in New Rochelle, N.Y. for over 40 years and was a loving husband and father. During a career that spanned over 40 years, Dr. Samuels tended to over 15,000 children and later treated many of his former patients' children. He was a pioneer in Westchester County in performing exchange transfusions for the treatment of newborns afflicted with RH incompatibility. Dr. Samuels was a Diplomate of the American Board of Pediatrics and was an attending physician at New Rochelle Hospital and Westchester County Medical Center. He served as a physician and surgeon in the United States Army Medical Corps during World War II.

Dr. Samuels was a humble man, who always had a joke and a twinkle in his eye for his patients. He was fascinated by words, loved puns, and was a successful competitor in state scrabble events winning many tournaments. He also was an avid bridge player. Dr. Samuels was a graduate of Duke University and the University of Maryland Medical School. He was a loyal fan of the Duke Blue Devils throughout his life. Dr. Samuels had a special appreciation of nature and frequently took his children on nature walks explaining the flora and fauna they encountered.

Dr. Samuels married the former Elaine Newbergh of Rye, New York in 1941 and they shared a loving marriage for over 71 years. Dr. Samuels was the proud father of three children, Dr. William Samuels of Providence, Rhode Island (Elizabeth), Laura Samuels of Cape Cod, Massachusetts, and Susan Robins of Miami, Florida (Philip). He was the grandfather of Dr. Eve Samuels Fields of Vienna, Virginia (Michael), Dr. Aaron Samuels of Atlanta, Georgia, , Jason Robins of Boston, Massachusetts, Allison Robins of Miami, Florida, , Elissa Robins of Santa Monica, California (Timothy Rondeau), Carly Robins (Joseph Geraldi ) of Brooklyn, New York, and Toshin Samuels of Chatham, Massachusetts. Additionally, he was the great-grandfather of Benjamin and Theodore Fields and Madeleine and Collette Rondeau. A Memorial Service will be held Sunday, January 6, 2013, at the home of Philip and Susan Robins, officiated by Rabbi Jonathan Kaplan of Temple Beth Chai in Coral Springs, Florida. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be sent to The Smile Train at www.smiletrain.org.
