BRICKMAN

Dr. Isadore David Brickman died after a long and courageous battle with heart and kidney disease on April 22, 2014. His family is thankful to all of the medical professionals that treated him with respect and dignity through his journey. He is survived by his wife Jean Brown Brickman, sons Philip Brickman and Brian Brickman, son and daughter in law Robert and Caroline Brickman and their children Simon, Jacob and Anna Brickman, all of New Orleans. He is also survived by his sister Beverly Brickman and her children Debbie, Pam and Reuban.
Born in New Orleans on December 5, 1938 at Touro Infirmary, the son of the late Dr. Isadore Brickman and Fannie W. Brickman, and nephew of the late Ms. Sophie Weinstein and Robert Weinstein. Dr. Brickman was a graduate of Isidore Newman School, class of 1955, earned an undergraduate degree from Tulane University and medical degree from LSU Medical School. He started his training while serving as a major in the U.S. Air Force in Biloxi, Mississippi. He also was an intern at Touro Infirmary and would become a talented board certified thoracic surgeon and general surgeon. Practicing medicine and serving his patients with compassion and excellent care were central to his life, particularly those who were less fortunate. He was honored to be appointed as Director of New Orleans Charity Hospital and served in this role under Governor Edwards from 1972 to 1974. He spent the following years in private practice serving at several local hospitals and teaching at LSU medical school. In his later years, Dr. Brickman transitioned from surgery to general medicine. Despite losing his home to Katrina's flood waters and recovering from an illness in 2005, he returned to New Orleans to live in his office and serve his patients through providing house calls. This was a time when doctors were in short supply and he made visits to homes in all neighborhoods of the city. In his later life, Dr. Brickman was a member of Temple Sinai and after retiring enjoyed spending time with his family and his pets.

A memorial service will be held at Temple Sinai in New Orleans on Sunday, April 27 at 1:00 PM. The family asks that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to Temple Sinai and to the LA-SPCA which were dear causes and supports for him.
