Peoria – Israel Berman, 83, of Peoria, IL passed away Friday, December 6, 2013 at Unity Point Methodist Medical Center. He was born January 30, 1930 in Brooklyn, NY to Harry and Jennie (Gelman) Berman. Israel served and retired from the United States Air Force after twenty years of service. During his time in the Air Force and after he retired, he went to college and obtained multiple degrees including his Master’s Degree in History. Peoria – Israel Berman, 83, of Peoria, IL passed away Friday, December 6, 2013 at Unity Point Methodist Medical Center. He was born January 30, 1930 in Brooklyn, NY to Harry and Jennie (Gelman) Berman.



Israel served and retired from the United States Air Force after twenty years of service. During his time in the Air Force and after he retired, he went to college and obtained multiple degrees including his Master’s Degree in History. Israel later worked for District 150 as a special education teacher. He taught high school students at Peoria Youth Farm and Guardian Angel school.



Israel’s hobbies included traveling with his wife across the United States and Europe, cooking, science fiction novels, woodworking, and spending time with his family and friends. During his time in Japan, Israel took up the sport of Judo. He would eventually earn his fourth degree black belt and would become a national certified referee. This certification allowed him to referee in the Pan-Am Games.



Israel was a member of Congregation Anshai Emeth in Peoria, IL.



Israel was loving and devoted to family and friends. Surviving are: his wife Arlene (Adler) Berman of Peoria, IL, children; Leonard (Robin) Berman of Albuquerque, NM, Norman Berman of Grand Rapids, MI, Sarah (Patrick) Stewart of Peoria, IL, grandchildren; Pleas, Emily, Julia, and Jack, great grandson Kayde, and his brother Bob (Barbara) Berman of Roslyn, PA. Israel was preceded in death by sons; Kenneth and Joseph Berman, daughter June Berman, and his sister Judy Goldman.



Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, December 11, 2013 at Davison-Fulton Woodland Chapel in Peoria. Visitation will be from 9 – 10:30 a.m. at the funeral home. Interment will be in Camp Butler National Cemetery.
