J.C. Warren Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Nov. 30, 2012.

Welsh - J C "Coach" Warren, 67, passed away Thursday, November 29, 2012, in a local hospital.
He was born on June 17, 1945, in Orange, TX. He grew up in Shelbyville, TX, and attended Shelbyville High where he was an All-State basketball and football player.
He attended McNeese State University and played for the legendary Ralph Ward. He earned several awards there for his outstanding athletic ability.
He was a coach, teacher and assistant principal at Welsh High School. He was "Coach of the Year" numerous times, and his girls' basketball team was State Runner-Up.
He became the youngest principal in the state of Louisiana at Bell City High.
He became a State Farm agent and was named the #1 agent in the company for two consecutive years. He became a State Farm field executive manager, managing agents in Lake Charles, Lafayette and New Orleans. He was a lifetime member of the coveted President's Club and Million Dollar Round Table. He was chosen by his peers to receive the "Bill Sanders Award" for outstanding management skills.
He served as a Jeff Davis Parish School Board member, was a graduate of Leadership of Lafayette, a Hospice of Acadiana volunteer, charter member of Louisiana Open Golf Tournament Board of Directors, member of Boys and Girls Club Board of Directors, Cystic Fibrosis Board, Rotary Club, Greyhound Backers and the Jeff Davis Business Alliance. He was a Big Brothers Big Sisters volunteer and conducted basketball workshops for them. He was a Top 28 Basketball Tournament host, "The Blue Coats." He was inducted into the LHSAA Hall of Fame; one of his proudest accomplishments was being the founder of the Louisiana Little Dribblers program in 1971.
His vision of providing young people with activities to keep them "off the streets" and to provide them with the fundamentals of basketball proved to help many earn college educations by attending universities on basketball scholarships. Many of these players became coaches themselves.
At the time of his death he was owner of Go Minis SWLA and Cowboy Towing of Lake Charles.
J C was "bigger than life." He loved his friends and family more than life itself and always lived by the "Golden Rule." He battled Parkinson's disease so gracefully for 20 years. It ravished his body, but never took away his spirit. There is a writing called "The Dash" which says that all we leave behind is the dash between our birthdate and death date. His "Dash" will leave an impact on all that knew him and will be his "Footprints" on their hearts.
He is survived by his wife of 44 years, Kathy Gordon Warren, his children, Ron Warren, Rachelle Richard and Renee Warren, and his grandchildren, Kai Lognion, Chloe Warren, Jillian Richard, Jace Warren and Ian Richard. He is preceded in death by his parents, Joyce and Margaret Warren, and his grandson, Derek Hebert.
Pallbearers will be his son, Ron Warren; grandson, Kai Lognion, brothers, George, Mac and Larry Warren; nephew, Michael Warren. Honorary Pallbearers will be Tommy Meyer, Steve Grantham, Joe Comeaux, Ed Green, Kelvin George and Michael Prudhomme.
His service will be 2:00 p.m., Sunday, December 2, 2012, at First Baptist Church in Welsh. Rev. Pat Deshotel will officiate. Visitation will be Saturday from 4:00 p.m. until 9:00 p.m. and resume Sunday from 9:00 a.m. until 1:00 p.m. at Hixson Funeral Home of Welsh and from 1:00 p.m. until time of service at the church. Interment will be at Oaklawn Cemetery. Words of comfort may be shared with the family at www.hixsonfuneralhomes.com

I started first grade with JC. He was the only other person I knew as we lived a few miles apart and our dads were good friends. I have three other siblings who loved J C as much as I did. I am sorry that he is gone because I would have loved knowing him and his family. I know that many people loved him and will miss him as he truly must have been "bigger than life" as an adult. He was that to me as a little kid!! My prayers are with you as you adjust your life and routine. He will be watching over you and yours. May God give you comfort in the days to come.

Mrs. Kathy,
Outside of my family, there was no one that influenced, inspired, taught me and captured my admiration more than Coach Warren did. We (his students, players, friends) are so lucky to have been blessed with his leadership, generosity, and humor. I learned so much from that man, that I can't thank him and you enough. I still remember the laughter and stories he told me, the chalk from the eraser on my glasses when he caught me in one of my "pranks", the "easy Chairs",the sincerity of his determination in coaching. He was truly one of a kind.
Be thankful that you were able to share so many wonderful years with such a great man. You were the luckiest one of all! We only had a small part of his life.
Come to think of it....... HE was the lucky one! He had YOU!

Love You

Mrs. Kathy, I was shocked and saddened to hear of Coach Warren's death. I was fortunate enough to be in his class when he first started at Welsh High. I was not athletically inclined at all, but he was such a great role model and always encouraged everyone to be the best they could. I was fortunate enough to be able to assist him with the Little Dribblers when he started it and was really proud that he thought enough of younger children to get them involved in basketball early in their lives. Later in life, although we did not see each other very often, he always had such a great smile and laugh when we did run into each other. We would catch up on each other's lives and then move on. He always impressed me with his love of life and family. I wish I had known of his death earlier so that I could have paid my respects in person. You and the rest of the family are in my prayers.

JC's greatest contribution to my life was his sharing with me the book "Tough Love" which I consequently used when my children went through some tough times in their lives. I subsequently passed the book on friends and employees who were going through similar experiences. He reached many others through his example of how a life should be lived.

Remember

Remember me when I am gone away,
Gone far away into the silent land;
When you can no more hold me by the hand,
Nor I half turn to go yet turning stay.
Remember me when no more day by day
You tell me of our future that you plann'd:
Only remember me; you understand
It will be late to counsel then or pray.
Yet if you should forget me for a while
And afterwards remember, do not grieve:
For if the darkness and corruption leave
A vestige of the thoughts that once I had,
Better by far you should forget and smile
Than that you should remember and be sad.

One line in the Obituary jumped out immediately. He was "bigger than life." I graduated in 1971 and that is exactly how I remember him!! It was evident then that he truly cared for the students and children in general!!. My deepest sympathy to his family.

Dearest Kathy, children, and grandchildren... JC leaves such an awesome legacy ... you most of all ... but too all the students and teachers whose lives he touched, all the insurance customers and colleagues he helped ... even just the people he passed by in his life's walk! His smile and love of life could bring joy to anyone who was fortunate enough to cross him on the street. JC was such a good friend and confidant to Steve; his illness and passing has touched us profoundly. I hope you find peace and comfort in the knowledge that he is resting in the arms of His Savior.
