Jane Reed Tatum Tucker passed away peacefully August 10, 2014 at the Cascades at Verdae in Greenville, South Carolina. She was 89 years old. She is preceded in death by her parents and a brother, Dr. Albert F. Tatum. Jr.
She was born in Tuscaloosa, Alabama to the late Lois and Albert Tatum Sr. on March 10, 1925. Her childhood was spent in Tuscaloosa, helping in her father's downtown drug store. In 1941 she graduated from Tuscaloosa High School, and in 1945 she graduated from the University of Alabama with a B.S. in Early Childhood Education.
In 1947 Jane married Quincey W. "Tommy" Tucker Jr., a member of the Air Force JAG. They were married for fifty-eight years. During their time in the Air Force they resided in Washington D.C., Texas, Philippines and Germany before settling in Montgomery. When they were not in Montgomery, they could be found surrounded by family and friends at their condominium in Fort Walton Beach, Florida.
She was a most loving mother, teacher and counselor. When her youngest child went to college, she decided to earn a graduate degree. In 1973, Jane received a Master's of Science in Counseling from Troy University.
She was a gifted singer, piano player and writer of short stories and poems. In her later years she enjoyed writing her memoirs.
Jane had a generous heart and spirit and made it a priority to serve in her community. She was active with PEO and served as President in years passed, and with the Exchangettes, also serving as their President.
Most importantly, Jane was a devout Christian, and found great pleasure in teaching and sharing scriptures. She was a member of First United Methodist Church of Montgomery. It was her greatest joy to participate in the Lay Speakers ministry of the church – sharing the Word and praying with those in assisted living facilities and nursing homes.
She leaves to cherish her memory a son, Joseph Tucker (Charlotte) of Atlanta, Georgia; a daughter Anne Tucker Crews (Richard) of Greenville, South Carolina; a grandson Scott Crews (Lyndsay) of Brentwood, Tennessee, a granddaughter Laura Crews Timmerman (Jon) of Central, South Carolina; two great grandchildren, Matthew Crews and Tatum Crews; a niece Carol Tatum Williams (Ed), great nephew Edwin Williams (Sharon); great niece Anne Williams Cadle (David), four great, great nieces and nephews Ayna, Bruce, Isabel and Reed, many PEO sisters and dear friends.
Visitation will be held at 2:00 pm on August 16, 2014 at Leak Memory Chapel, 945 Lincoln Rd, Montgomery, AL. A funeral service will follow at 3:00 pm, with Dr. George Allison presiding. Serving as pallbearers will be Ed Williams, David Cadle, Wayne Sellers, Greg Sellers, Steve Duggins, and Rick Kemmerlin. Burial will be at Greenwood cemetery.
