Published by Legacy Remembers on Jan. 6, 2013.

John Esperanza Kinong went to be with the Lord on Friday, January 4, 2013. He was 79 years young.

He was born to the late David and Esperanza Kinong on January 22, 1933 in Baguio, Philippines. He was the eldest of 7 siblings. In his younger days, John joined a boxing club and won 2 fights. He graduated from high school and went on to join the United States Navy when he was 20. He served in the Vietnam War.

John married Delin Tacio on September 3, 1973. Shortly after, they relocated to San Diego, CA. John retired from the military after 20 years of service. I would like to know if anybody else out there is still active in this memorial guest book. If not, I will close my membership. I will, however, keep in my heart, everyone that have written a memorial here and I will also print this out so that I can look it over whenever the memory of my brother overwhelms me. Thanks to all of your kind and comforting words. May our good Lord keep His loving arms around you and keep you at peace.

I did not meet my brother until I was about 12 years old. He used to come home to Baguio city when he had a break from his tour in Vietnam. I always get excited when he gets home as he would bring goodies from inside the base and would take us to camp John Hay or go swimming at Asin hot spring or go bowling, etc. When I came to the states and decided to go to the military manong John would persuade me to go to the navy as that was his career. But I elected to go to the army instead and he would try to scare and tease me by saying, "You're the property of the army now". He had a morbid sense of humor. I really did not miss my dad because mng. John filled that void in my life so I am forever grateful to him for that. He left knowing that I am secure and his own family is secure. I guess God, knowing that he had completed the task he was assigned to do here on earth, He then took him back to his real Home. I love you mng. John. I look forward to seeing you again over in the "glory" land!

I had the honor of meeting brother John when we first came to Ablaze for Jesus church in 2007. I have been so blessed to know him and fellowship with him, as well as getting to know his wonderful family. I have seen in him an example of what a sincere, dedicated and loving man of God should be.

Uncle John was one of the kindest person you will ever meet. I will never forget the times when my siblings and I would go over to their house and pick calamansi. Uncle John and I would both look at the tree and locate where the biggest fruits are (which is always at the topmost branch). Because I was short, he would lovingly ask if I would be able to reach those fruits. Once I am up the tree, he would watch from the porch and would guide me which branch holds the biggest fruits and tells me to just go ahead and break the branch. He would also let me wear his jacket to protect my arms from getting scratched from the tree's branches. I will truly miss his gentle smile and sense of humor. My family will always be grateful for his love and kindness. We love you, Uncle John.

Uncle John was such a cool guy. I met him first in PI and at first I was so shy because it was my first time meeting him in person. I thought if we was a strict guy but turns out he was not. He was kind, jolly, and knows how to make jokes, he always likes to read his books take a walk at Burnham park, watch a movie and at the end of the day we would massage him. I would never forget him because he never forgets to send me a card on Christmas day. I will miss you Uncle and I will never forget what you told me.

Uncle John Kinong

A couple of summers ago, we had the pleasure of staying with the Kinong family, who welcomed us into their home. Uncle Johnny was a very kind-hearted and dedicated family man, who seemed to never forget the value of a good sense of humor.  He always spoke of his family with the greatest sincerity and love.  Our time meeting Uncle Johnny although brief will always be remembered fondly.  Love and prayers.

It always brings sadness to anyone learning the death of someone. On the other hand, it should console us all that God calls us when He knows that our work is done in this life and it's time to give us rest. While the late John and I may not know each other that much like old time friends, I condole with everyone for his demise. Thanks to dear friends in San Diego for the constant updates. May John's soul rest in peace.

Uncle John was the coolest uncle anyone could have. Growing up, I didn't want to call him uncle because we were more like cousins. He was a great cook and enjoyed dishing up specialty meals for us. He always had a ready smile on his face and I could always talk to him about "stuff" and listened patiently. I can't remember when I last visited him in San Diego but I know we
parted with happy memories as we always talk about family on those visits.

Although we haven't had contact for some time now, I will never forget his gentleness and kndness. He will truly be missed!
