Jack Adams Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Aug. 25, 2012.

Jack Adams was born in Charleston, South Carolina July 18, 1934 to Charles B. and Rosa T. Adams. He passed away August 24, 2012 with his family at his bedside. When his family moved from South Carolina, they first settled in Seattle where Jack's father was a boat builder. They moved from Seattle to Whidbey Island and eventually came to Everett. Jack graduated from Everett High School in 1952 during which time he became an avid swimmer, lettering all three years as well as teaching swimming and lifeguarding at the YMCA. In 1956, he married the love of his life, his "sweetie" as he always called her, Dian. Together they created a very loving home while raising two children. Shortly after their marriage Jack began a career at Weyerhaeuser. He eventually continued his schooling at Everett Community College and the University of Washington where he graduated in 1975 with a degree in Electrical Engineering. His career spanned 37 years at Weyerhaeuser until all three mills closed in March 1992. After finally retiring, Jack volunteered at the Northshore Senior Center for nearly 10 years, teaching computer skills to other seniors and repairing and rebuilding their computers. Jack had a unique ability to take things apart, put them back together and have them work perfectly. Throughout his life, Jack had many passionate interests. He loved the great outdoors, which included hiking, boating, camping, tennis, basketball and gardening. Music also defined him. He played piano, improvising many of his favorites, playing duets with his daughter on the flute or his grandson on the guitar. But perhaps the most passionate of Jack's many interests and talents was his love for cars. He developed a real love for Triumphs and was a member the Tyee Triumph Club for several years where he participated in road rallies, parades, and car shows. In these last days many accolades have been given by family and friends. He was kind, compassionate, intelligent, loving, patient…a teacher and tutor to many fun, curious, known as "happy Jack," was a "Jack" of all trades and master of many…one of a kind, amazing and special…what a guy! Jack is survived by his wife of 56 years, Dian; son Charlie Adams (Mike); daughter Catherine Lau-Bingham (Gary); grandson, Bryant Lau and his father Allan Lau; brother Robert Adams (Vicki), sisters Josephine Millo Ford (Bernard), Geraldine Millo; brother-in-law Harry Searles; numerous nieces and nephews and many wonderful friends. Rest in Peace Jack, you are much loved and will be greatly missed.

Sweetie:

You were the best thing that every happened to me.

We lived the American Dream!

We had two wonderful children that we could be proud of.

Our daughter gave us a special grandson, your buddy.

You added onto our East Drive house and made me a beautiful sewing room
And sew I did!

You promised me a Rose Garden and you designed it and planted it for me
and we enjoyed it together.

You played beautiful music on the piano for me.

We traveled the highways and biways.

We had 56 great years together and then it was your turn to leave me.

And now, I'm making you a Memory Garden, you're in my heart forever,
you'll not be forgotten.

Love you,

Your Sweetie

Some thoughts about our special friend....

Jack had many amazing attributes. He was extremely intelligent, had a witty sense of humor, was self taught to play the piano, loved his family, cared about people, and would gladly give a helping hand. What comes to mind at this writing is his generosity.

We first met Jack and Dian at church. We each had a 6-month-old son - they had Charlie, we had Mark. One Saturday they invited us over to their house for Dian's homemade pizza, and we have been friends ever since. By the way, Charlie and Mark are 55 years old now!

One example of Jack's generosity is when our son, Mark, graduated from high school, we as a family drove to Disneyland. Along the way Art developed a severe blood clot in his leg which landed him in a Los Angeles hospital for 15 days in very serious condition. Jack and Dian insisted that Jack fly down to LA and help Art fly home. As it turned out it wasn't necessary, but Jack was right there to help if we needed him.

Another time, our youngest son Scott was starting his last year of college and both he and Art lost their jobs that summer. Neither of them could find work as the economy was much the same as it is now...you couldn't buy a job. Jack was always a great believer in education, to go as far as you could go. Every college quarter, he and Dian faithfully helped Scott out financially so he could finish out the year and get his music teaching degree.

Everyone who knew Jack knew how much he was into computers. He used them, taught them, collected them, fixed and built them. He thought everyone should have one...NOT ME! I did not want one, but after awhile, with Jack's urging, I started to show a little interest. Here came Jack and Dian with a "Jack Built" computer for me. He not only gave it to me, but set it up, spent many, many hours teaching me how to use it, and kept it in good running condition. Because of Jack, I love my computer! It's like a hobby to me and I would never part with it.

Jack was a patient, generous, and caring man. We are going to miss our great friend immensely.

There is not enough I can say about this man. Wonderful husband. Wonderful father. And a great friend. Always there to help in any way he could no matter what was asked of him. Some times you didn't even have to ask. He'd just show up. And he gave 100% every time. No questions asked. The most even tempered, easy going person I have ever met. Not sure I'll ever meet anyone like him again. Good luck on your next journey Jack. You will always be loved and missed by everyone who knew you. None of us were done with you yet Jack. Peace!

Just one more time Dad …
I want to go for a boat ride with you, we had so much fun on the water … even when the gear broke in the motor and we got pulled back to Mukilteo Beach by your friend from work. Or, all the times we went water skiing … you were so proud of me when I finally got up on one ski.

Just one more time Dad …
I want to see you in my rearview mirror as we race our cars through the country roads … or call you when the Spitfire leaves me along side of the road, I know you'll be right there to help me … and hear you say “that's my girl” when I pull a faster time than you running the auto slalom.

Just one more time Dad…
I want to sit at the dinner table and listen to you tell us a story or how something works, tell mom what a great job she did on dinner and get a great big hug when I leave to go home.

Just one more time Dad …
I want to hear you laugh out loud … play the piano … tell me I look pretty … drink coffee and eat another cookie … and tell me how your “asa-do-phis of the glevis” was acting up.

Just one more time Dad …
I want you help set up the family train set at Christmas time while wearing the locomotive hat and scarf … sing Happy Birthday to you … and wish you a Happy Father's Day.

I wasn't done with you yet … love you Dad.

Jack Adams was a one of a kind man. He and his wife Dian were such a caring couple, always made us feel welcome in their home. Jack was " Happy Jack." He was so fun to be with and was always willing to go where ever we asked him. Of course he was happy to get coffee and a cookie where ever he went. Jack was blessed with a wonderful family. You could feel their love for him before, during and after his passing. I'm sure he felt it also. We will miss him, but know he will be there with us in spirit as we go on our Monday night out, he will be watching us, waiting for Dian to bring his salad and coffee. Thanks for the good times and memories.

I love all off the photos! Oh Jack, what a wonderful man. He was always like a grandfather to me. Growing up, Jack and Dian lived right across the street and were always willing to have my brother Evan and I over. I have fond memories of looking at Jack's cars in the garage, always going over and asking what he was working on next. We have photos of me as a child after running over to Jack and Dian's house in my diapers and having them catch me and return me home. He was always a sweet, gentle man who will leave me with fond memories from my childhood. Jack you will always be in my memories! Sending the Adams family all of my love.

It's a sad day when we loose our father but sadder still is loosing them while they are still living. It is so hard to watch. My heart goes out to you and your family. I ran into your sister and"Iggy" in the cafeteria. Not sure how she recognized me in fat body, but she did. It was such a joy seeing Bryant all grown up. He is so handsome. His smiling eyes reminded me of you.

Dian: I am so sorry to hear of Jack's passing. It was a privilege to know him. He helped so much with whatever was needed in our computer department at Northshore Senior Center. His compassion and lack of ego were so inspiring---he was such a kind man! My heart goes out to your family at your loss.
