J. C. (Jack) Burkett, 86, of Williamsburg, passed away peacefully on Friday, May 9, 2014. He was born December 29, 1927 in Monticello, MS to Jesse Oscar and Mary Louise Rogers Burkett. Following his graduation from Belvidere (IL) High School, Jack served in the U.S. Army in the European Theater from 1946 to 1949.

Jack married Jacqueline ("Jackie") Olson, whom he met at work in Chicago, IL. They raised five children and were happily married nearly 46 years until Jackie's death in September 1998. Jack's career in agricultural equipment sales took them from Chicago to Ohio, and finally to Williamsburg in 1975.

He was an immediate friend to anyone he met and would quickly initiate conversations with prior strangers, but one needed to be careful that he was not pulling one's leg. He loved music and working with his hands and was quick to help friends and family with small home improvement projects. He had a wonderful sense of humor and an infectious laugh.

Left to cherish Jack's memory are many friends and loved ones, including his children: David Burkett (Londa) of Northwood, OH; Barbara Winfree (Bill) of Williamsburg; Bruce Burkett (Marcia) of Williamsburg; Dale Burkett (Carrie) of Centerville, OH; and Brian Burkett (Bridget) of Williamsburg; his fourteen grandchildren: Aaron (Stacey), Brianna, Paul (Jade), Adam, Emily (Phil), Sarah, Scott, Christopher, Kathryn, Melissa, Laura (Les), Thomas, Alan and Jonathan, and 2 great-grandchildren, Audrey and Hannah. His longtime friend, Jane DeBord, of Williamsburg, also survives Jack.

A memorial service will be held Sunday, May 18 at 2 p.m. at Nelsen Funeral Home, 3785 Strawberry Plains Road, Williamsburg, VA with reception following. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Jack's name to FISH Inc., 312 Waller Mill Road, Suite 800, Williamsburg, VA, 23185 or to Williamsburg United Methodist Church, 500 Jamestown Road, Williamsburg, VA 23185. Online condolences may be offered at www.nelsencares.com.
