Jack K. Gillard passed away on October 18th, 2013 at the age of 73 after a brief but courageous battle with lung cancer. He was born in Alpena, Michigan, the eldest son of a family of five. He was always proud of his Alpena heritage and enjoyed spending summers at the family cottage on Hubbard Lake. After lettering in track and football he graduated from Alpena High School in 1957. He attended the University of Michigan majoring in journalism. During his junior year he spent a semester abroad traveling through Europe and working on a Kibbutz in Israel on a fishing boat in the Sea of Galilee. He returned to Michigan to complete his degree and met his future wife, Mary Lou Osborn, a nursing student, at a 21st birthday party of a mutual friend at the Pretzel Bell in Ann Arbor in 1961. They were married in June of 1963 and headed off to Des Moines, Iowa where Jack worked at the Des Moines Register and Mary Lou was a nurse at Iowa Methodist Hospital. He worked covering stories across the state of Iowa and eventually wrote a weekly humorous column "Hawkeye Hurrah" retelling stories from small town Iowa. They welcomed their 2 sons, Andy and Monte, while in Iowa.
The family then moved to Petoskey Michigan where Jack tried his hand at writing novels and become a pottery/ceramic artist's assistant. Five years later they relocated to Oakland Township north of Rochester Hills, Michigan where he became managing editor of the Oakland Press and also wrote a column.
They returned to Ann Arbor in 1989 and he began working at the Ann Arbor News as a copy editor. In 1994, he began writing the popular biweekly column for the News. Many of his columns centered on life experiences in the two places he loved the most, Ann Arbor and Alpena. He has always loved dogs and would often write about his beloved dog Sam, who one night escaped from the house only to be brought home by a kindly cab driver. He won many awards for his column including the one about Sam. He retired from the Ann Arbor News shortly before its last edition in July of 2009. Jack was an avid reader, and enjoyed browsing for books in Ann Arbor's many bookstores and the Treasure Mart. Ever since his first year at Michigan Jack loved Blimpy Burger and frequently ate there.
He also loved the Ann Arbor Art Fairs and was a volunteer at the information booths for many years. He was a true blue Michigan fan, and enjoyed attending family tailgates and football games at the Big House. All of his children and grandchildren live in Ann Arbor and he enjoyed going to their school and sporting events.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Donald K. and Josephine Gillard, his sisters Donna L. Huston, Patty Jo Meden, and brothers Joel W. Gillard and Donald (Buzz) Gillard, niece Kathleen Huston, and dear cousin Mary (Joann) Malcomson and his beloved dogs Sam and Bentley. He is survived by his wife of 50 years Mary Lou, sons Jack Andrew and Montgomery and daughters in law Kelly (Allen) and Gabrielle (Tuchow); sister in law Donna Czarnecki, cousin Lucille Gillard, and four wonderful grandchildren, Benjamin, Nora, Isabelle and Sophia. As well as his nieces Christine Marguiles (Meden), Stephanie Inhat (Gillard), and nephews Richard Huston, Jphn Huston, Thomas Meden, and Matthew Gillard, and all his grand nieces and nephews.

A memorial service for Jack will take place at Conor O'Neills on Friday November 1st, 2013 at 5pm. Family, friends and colleagues are encouraged to attend to celebrate Jack's life. A family burial is planned next summer in Spruce Michigan.

In lieu of flowers, donations maybe made to Huron Valley Humane Society (3100 Cherry Hill Road, Ann Arbor, MI 48105) and St Joseph Mercy Health System in Ann Arbor (http://www.stjoesannarbor.org/giving). Please visit www.muehligannarbor.com to view and sign the online guest book.

"Many thanks to Jack's family for the very special memorial Friday evening! Although we were AHS classmates and shared 3 years on the U of M campus, I didn't..." Roland Schaedig (Ann Arbor)
