John "Jack" Hodgman, 73

Yarmouth – John "Jack" Loren Hodgman, Jr., 73 of Yarmouth died unexpectedly on Thursday, October 25, 2012. He was born on June 26, 1939 in Brewer, the younger of two sons of John and O. Frances (Reed) Hodgman. He grew up in South Portland and graduated from South Portland High School, Class of 1958. There he was a proud member of the Maine State Championship basketball team. Following the championship he had the pleasure of playing in Boston Garden against other New England State championship teams.

Jack attended SMVTI where he studied drafting. Later he enlisted in the US Air Force and served four years as a medic. After his discharge he returned to Maine and began a career in manufacturing with various companies. Conscientious and dedicated he is best described as a true Yankee who was not afraid of hard work. In doing so he was an example for his children; "Hodgmans never quit." His work ethic was one of his many legacies to them.

He met the love of his life on a blind date and had the good sense to marry her on August 17, 1968. Jack proudly enjoyed watching their daughter, son and grandchildren play all sports, but most especially high school and college basketball. He also enjoyed watching just about any sporting event in person or on television and it was always a pleasure to be around him when watching a game. The last night of his life was spent watching his son-in-law's Fryeburg Academy soccer team playing Yarmouth in the quarter final tournament game. He followed and rooted for Clipper athletics (except when they were playing Fryeburg Academy.) As Jack's five granddaughters have gotten older and expressed interests in dance, jazz, singing, art, and musical theater as well as athletics he applied his love for sport to any activity his beloved grandchildren enjoyed. With his wife at his side, he rarely missed an event.

Jack will be remembered as a man who was dependable, fair, loving, loyal and very gentle. He could also be silly without trying to be (always a hit with his grandkids) and was definitely a reliable and trustworthy friend. He was attentive to all around him and a devoted son, husband, father and grandfather. He always saw the good in people and never had an unkind word for anyone he knew.

"Before you speak, ask yourself: Is it kind, is it true, is it necessary, does it improve upon the silence?" -Shirdi Sai Baba. Jack was a man of few words; they were kind, and true, and only improved the silence.

Jack is survived by his wife of 44 years, Ann Hodgman of Yarmouth; his daughter Kelley Hodgman-Burns and her husband Robert and their daughters: Isabel, Anna Kathryn and Lucy Margaret all of Fryeburg; his son Michael Hodgman and his wife Tammy and their daughters: Abigayle and Emma Grace all of Windham; his brother Wayne Hodgman and his wife Becky of Florida.

A celebration of Jack's life will be held on Friday November 2, 2012 at 1:00 PM at Lindquist Funeral Home, One Mayberry Lane, Yarmouth with a reception immediately following at the funeral home. Burial will be in Riverside Cemetery at a later date.
