Jack's family moved to the Los Angeles area when he was five years old. He attended the local schools and did undergraduate work at Pepperdine College. While at Pepperdine he met and married Betty Mae Vanhoy.

He graduated from the Los Angeles College of Osteopathic Physicians and Surgeons in 1949 receiving a D.O. degree. Later the medical college became part of the University of California awarding him an M.D. degree.

Following an internship and surgical preceptorship, he moved to Bridgeport, California in the Eastern High Sierras with his wife and 4 sons in 1953. After completing his residency he opened an orthopedic surgery practice in Thousand Oaks, California. He moved to Redding, California in 1973 and had a full time orthopedic surgical practice. His son, Jack Nichols, II, joined him in his orthopedic practice in 1979. He retired from his surgical practice in 1990.

Afterwards he performed orthopedic consultations and later worked at Shasta Community Health Center and MRI imaging facilities. He continued working until 2011 and then completely retired due to health problems.

He and his wife, Betty, made 7 medical mission trips, six to Africa and one to South Korea. The last two trips to Africa were to Rwanda in 1995 and 1996 to help those in need physically and spiritually.
