Jack was born on May 1, 1930 in Rock Island to Charles and Mary (Robb) Pettit. He worked for many years as a laborer for the Chicago, Burlington & Quincy Railroad retiring in 1994. Afterwards, he could be seen carrying his water jug and pulling his tool-loaded lawnmower around the streets of Rock Island. He developed a little neighborhood mowing service that kept him busy and his customers happy. Jack took great pride in his work and was the best at "roping" a hill, guiding a lawnmower down it as though he were driving a team of horses. A stroke derailed his lawn service, but Jack continued to find ways to be useful for himself and for others until his death. He was a true "gentle"-man and will be missed.

He is survived by sisters, Pauline Anderson and Shirley Klingsmith, both of Missouri; Stella Armstrong and a brother, Raymond, both of Wisconsin; brother-in-law, Tom Fischlein, Eldridge, IA; and several very good friends who know who they are.

His brothers, Billy and Bob, and a sister, Betty Fischlein, preceded him in death.
