Jack Shorstein of Jacksonville, Florida died peacefully on July 1, 2014 at home in Jacksonville. He was 85 years old. Jack obtained his accounting and law degrees from the University of Florida, where he was president of Florida Blue Key, and member of the University of Florida Hall of Fame. He chaired the 1957 Blue Key Homecoming banquet with Senator John F. Kennedy as speaker and Justice Stephen C. O'Connell as toastmaster. In 1959, Jack founded the CPA firm that is presently Shorstein & Shorstein, P.A. Jack Shorstein of Jacksonville, Florida died peacefully on July 1, 2014 at home in Jacksonville. He was 85 years old.
Jack obtained his accounting and law degrees from the University of Florida, where he was president of Florida Blue Key, and member of the University of Florida Hall of Fame. He chaired the 1957 Blue Key Homecoming banquet with Senator John F. Kennedy as speaker and Justice Stephen C. O'Connell as toastmaster. In 1959, Jack founded the CPA firm that is presently Shorstein & Shorstein, P.A. He was a charter member of the American Association of Attorneys and CPAs, and a member of The Florida Bar for over 53 years. Jack was very active in civic and charitable organizations. He served as president and chairman of the Jacksonville Jewish Center, Treasurer of the Jacksonville Chamber of Commerce, Vice Chairman of the Jacksonville Port Authority, Chair of the Mayor's Committee on Separation of Jacksonville Air and Seaport Authorities, delegate to the 1976 Democratic National Convention, and has been officer and director/trustee for various charitable foundations. Jack served his country as quartermaster officer in the U.S. Army occupation of Germany and was in charge of the loose issue of all supply items that were shipped throughout Europe. After active duty, Jack was promoted to Captain while in law school. During his senior year of high school and first two years of college, Jack served in the U.S. Navy Reserve.
Jack is survived by his wife, Judy; children Mark (Beth) Shorstein, Michael (Robin) Shorstein, and Neal (Chris Doane) Shorstein, as well as Jay (Monica) Braver and Lee (Yvonne) Braver; brothers Bud Shorstein and Harry (Ann) Shorstein; and grandchildren Daniel, Rebecca, Jennifer, Benjamin, Mathew, Benay, Sophia, Benjamin, Julia, Stephen, and Rachel.
Jack is preceded in death by his first wife, Sylvia H. Shorstein.
The funeral service took place at the Jacksonville Jewish Center located at 3662 Crown Point Road, Thursday, July 3, 2014 at 10 A.M., followed by interment at the New Center Cemetery, with Rabbi Jonathan Lubliner officiating.
Contributions in Jack's memory may be made to the Sylvia H. Shorstein Scholarship Fund at the Jacksonville Jewish Center.
