Jack Stanford Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Dec. 8, 2012.

Jack B. Stanford, 82, of Chattanooga, died on Friday, December 7, 2012.

Jack was born in Chattanooga where he spent his early years before the family moved to Gadsden, Alabama. He was chosen by his classmates as Mr. Gadsden High and was a star football player at Gadsden High School. He was a graduate of the University of Chattanooga where he played on a football scholarship and met the love of his life and forever dance partner, Jody.

Jack was a civic-minded community activist and generous volunteer wherever he and his family lived. After graduating from the University of Chattanooga, he was a teacher, Coach, Summer Camp Director, Admissions Director and Assistant Head master at Baylor School in Chattanooga from 1953 to 1972. He was then the Headmaster of Presbyterian Day School in Memphis, TN from 1972 to 1979 and President and Headmaster of The Hutchinson School in Memphis, TN from 1979 to 1995. During this period of time he was the first Independent School Head to serve as President of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools. He also served as a Board Member of the Tennessee, Mid-South Southern and National Associations of Independent Schools.

In his retirement, Jack continued working as a private educational consultant, Board Member, and as Interim Headmaster for numerous private independent schools. He never stopped working to better the lives and education of thousands of young people and served as mentor for numerous educational administrators.

Jack was an active member of First Baptist Church of Chattanooga where he served as a deacon and the Waters Sunday School Class teacher. He was also a former member and Chairman of the deacons of First Baptist Church and Trinity Baptist Church in Memphis.

He was preceded in death by his parents, William and Nena Stanford; brother, William Chad Stanford; and sister, Midge Stanford Ingram.

He remains in the hearts of his surviving family, including his lovely wife Jody, his daughters, Susan Beth Purifico and Dr. Lisa D. Stanford; his sons-in-laws, Bob Purifico of Marlton, New Jersey and James Bailey of Akron, Ohio, and his G-Baby, Alisa. He is loved by all who had the privilege and honor of sharing life with him.

Visitation will be from 4 to 5 PM in the Baylor Dining Hall, Chattanooga, TN. followed by a 5 PM Memorial service on Monday, December 10, 2012 in the Baylor Chapel with Rev. Dan Scot officiating. A reception will follow at the headmaster's home.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the First Baptist Church of Chattanooga, Baylor School, Presbyterian Day School, Hutchinson School, or the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga.

Arrangements are by the East Chapel of Chattanooga Funeral Home, Crematory and Florist. 404 S. Moore Road, East Ridge, TN 37412.

Mr. Stanford was one of the kindest and finest men I ever met. He was a wonderful teacher and role model for every boy at PDS. He always seemed to remember everyone's name - no matter how long it had been since he saw you last. His smile was infectious. A true gentleman. He will surely be missed.

I send my thoughts and prayers to Jody and the family. Jack was an exceptional man and an outstanding educator and leader. He inspired students and teachers alike to strive for their best efforts. He was strong but kind, and so generous with his time. As a teacher you always felt he would share his wisdom, and that he had your back. As a student you always knew that he cared about YOU. We will miss him, but know that he now resides with our Heavenly Father, where he enjoys being in the Presence, and where we will see him again. I am sure our Lord has a special place for those He has called to teach, because through His guidance, they have had a powerful effect on the minds and hearts of hundreds of children and adults, and thus on the history of the world itself. Dear Jody and family, please accept my deepest sympathy. I have kind thoughts of you going all the way back to City High and UC. I always enjoyed seeing you and Jack at CHS class reunions.

Dennis & Mary Alice Brown

Confidants, friends, mentors, and role models - none express adequately the role that Jack and Jody both have played over the last forty years of Mary Alice and my lives. I know we are supposed to understand that Jack has gone to a "better place". And that he is now free of the back pain and suffering that he suffered over the years and the physical limitations more recently caused by his failing heart. And I know that in time, the great memories we have and continued opportunities to share in more good times with Jody will prevail. But at this moment those sentiments offer little solace. We simply hurt for Jody and the girls. And truth be told, we hurt for ourselves and everyone else who has enjoyed the company of this great human being in the past. It is said that in life one may have many acquaintances and friends, but is fortunate to have even a handful of true friends - friends who make it a point to be with you through thick and thin and you know always will be there for you. Jack and Jody Stanford both are among those who have been thought by so many to be one of those true friends. Dang it Jack. Mary Alice and I miss you so much already.
