Jacqueline Via Smith, of Martinsville, VA died Friday, June 27, 2014 at the York Care Center in Gainesville, FL. A native of Bassett VA, Jackie was born on August 28 to the late Arthur B. Via and Mary Elizabeth Via (Norman). She grew up as the youngest of three beautiful sisters and attended Fieldale High School. Popular with everyone she met, she enjoyed athletics and reading, was active socially and made many friends that lasted her lifetime.

Upon graduating from Fieldale in 1946, Jackie -- then 16 years old – attended the Perry Business School in Bassett. After completion of her business degree she took a job with the Martinsville branch offices of Leslie Campbell, CPA. It was here, while taking the office's daily mail to the post office, that she attracted the eye of her husband-to-be Sam F. Smith Jr. The two were married on January 20, 1956. Their marriage lasted until Sam's death over 41 years later: through the raising of two children, through good times and hard, through regular separations dictated by Sam's work and through travel that carried them to many different locales.

Jackie was a loyal and loving wife, as well as a gracious, bright and conversational hostess to the many clients she met through Sam's career in sales and marketing. All those who knew them well never hesitated to say that Sam's success was due in no small part to Jackie's engaging friendship, and to the wonderful way she made people feel at home. Her family nickname as "the hostess with the mostess" was well-deserved.

Jackie was also active in the rearing of her children, taking on her duties as mother with the same energy that defined her as a wife and partner. She guided, grilled, directed and loved them, and was rewarded when both children went on to earn undergraduate and graduate degrees. During this time her mother was severely injured in an automobile accident and was subsequently bedridden. Jackie – along with her two sisters – took care of her mother several days a week over the course of the next fourteen years, until her mother's passing in 1980.

Jackie was an active member for many years at Pocahontas Bassett Baptist Church, and was a faithful believer in Jesus Christ. She was loved by all who knew her and is deeply missed. However, her friends and family are comforted with the assurance that she has been reunited with her mother, her husband and her Savior.

She is survived by her sisters Selma Via Gusler of Gainesville FL, and Genevieve Via Stone of Collinsville VA; two children, Dr. Mary Fran Smith of Gainesville and S. Frank Smith III (wife Judy) of Charlottesville, VA; two grandchildren, Mary Lynne Smith of Oakland, CA and Sam F. Smith IV of Lansing, MI; nieces Elizabeth Gayle Hoyle (husband Jimmy) of Collinsville, Margaret "Tish" Smith of Martinsville, Ann Parker Justice of Germantown TN, Bette Smith Compton (husband Alan) of Escondido CA, and Sally Via Newton (husband Jim) of Atlanta GA; one nephew, Ronnie Via (wife Bonnie) of Richmond VA; and her close friend of many years, Margaret Ann Swanson of Martinsville.

Funeral services will be held at McKee Stone Funeral Home, 109 Broad Street, Martinsville, VA on Wednesday July 9, 2014, at 12:00 pm. Burial will follow at Roselawn Burial Park on 103 Clearview Drive.
