On November 22nd we lost our Husband, Father and Grandfather, James Christopher Murphy III, known better as Jim and even better to his friends as "The Murph". Born on June 2, 1946 in Queens, New York he was the only son of James Christopher Murphy Jr. and Ruth Elizabeth Murphy and the younger brother of Patricia Owens of North Massapequa, NY. Jim grew up in Garden City, New York and graduated from Garden City High School in 1964. He went on to study at various universities and later joined the Air Force in 1966 where he was stationed in Hawaii and served for two years.
Dad met the love of his life, Margaret Hoctigan (known as "Bunt" to Dad) in New York and they married in 1968. Jim was the Father, mentor, coach and friend to four daughters, Colleen, Erin, Meaghan all born in New York and Allison born in Houston, Texas. His career spanned 40 years in numerous positions within the Oil/Gas industry as a crude shipping trader which initially brought him from New York City to Houston in the mid 1970's.
Dad always wanted to be the first one to own the latest & greatest in technology: microwave, camcorder, ANY video game devices, computers, cellphone, etc. Before any device became the 'it' thing Dad would have it and tell anyone who shown any interest of his latest find. A definite 'gadget guy' of any electronics, Mom often called Dad "Peter Pan" since he was the boy who never grew up. When Dad shopped, he did so in excess. He couldn't just buy one rugby shirt, he had to buy TEN! Those that know our family have heard of "Murphying it up".
He had a LOVE of music and movies. Name a song or band and we guarantee that he has a copy on his computer and more than likely he has MULTIPLE versions of that song. As far as movies, Dad was a fan of the Pink Panther series, Young Frankenstein, Animal House and Planes, Trains & Automobiles; just to name a few. Dad also had a knack for giving nicknames to everyone including some favorites like "flamedog" and "flounder face". At times his family referred to Dad as "Cliff Claven" given his keen knowledge of all things trivial. When in doubt, "call Dad". He would know the answer or solution.
He was "Pops" to four young grandchildren: Sean(9) and Maeve (5) children of Meaghan and Ryan O'Connell; Caden (8) son of Erin and Brad Struck and Chase (2) son of Allison and Henry Davis.
Dad is preceded in death by his Father, James Christopher Murphy and Mother, Ruth Elizabeth Murphy.
He is survived by his wife Madge Murphy of Frisco, Texas. Daughters Colleen Murphy Smith (Husband Mark ) of Houston, TX; Erin Murphy Struck (Husband Brad) of Frisco, TX; Meaghan Murphy O'Connell (Husband Ryan) of Trumbull CT and Allison Murphy Davis (Husband Henry) of Mamaroneck, NY. He is also survived by Sister, Patricia Owens and her Husband, Richard, of North Massapequa, NY along with Dad's nieces and nephews: Cathy Pritchard, Trish Owens, Rich Owens and Chris Owens.
In lieu of flowers, the Murphy family ask for contributions to the GBS/CIDP Foundation International. Donation information can be found at GBS-CIDP.org.

My thoughts and prayers go out to you today. Jim was a great man, a larger than life man. He welcomed Matt into your family, as you all did, during the seven years he commuted from Houston to New York. I am forever grateful for the kindness you showed him. Jim was a great husband, loving father and grandfather, and loyal friend. This world's loss is heaven's gain. I know he is happy and enjoying heaven's delights.
Peace to you all, Pat Warren

I have a million memories that include Mr. Murphy: from his role as "creepy surgeon" in the elementary school haunted house, to his pyramid-shaped beer can collection (which we might have knocked over), to his gadgetry and his relentless teasing of his girls and their friends. I do think of him in one of his many rugby polos! The Murphy house was always such a fun place to spend time when we were growing up. While I saw him less as the kids grew up and we all scattered, I could tell from the stories that the quintessential Jim - a one-of-a-kind character - never changed no matter what health challenges came his way. My condolences to the family. All of you are in my thoughts and prayers every day.
