James Carlin Allen Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Sep. 30, 2011.

James Carlin Allen, 88, of Alexandria, VA, died on September 28, 2011 following a courageous battle with kidney failure. His determination to carry on was an inspiration to all who knew him.
Born in Washington, DC, in 1923, he moved to Alexandria, VA, where he lived for most of his life. After valiantly serving his country as a Marine in the South Pacific during World War II, he returned home, started a family, and attended American University. After college, he fought tirelessly for workers' rights for many years as an executive in the Industrial Unions Department of the AFL-CIO until his retirement.
Carlin was a devoted husband and father. He is survived by his wife of 66 years, Anna P. Allen, of Alexandria, VA; sister, Virginia Young, of York, PA; and brother, Robert C. Haith, of Panama City, FL. He was a loving and supportive father to his daughter, Sharon, and son-in-law, Robert I'Anson, of Mason Neck, VA; son, James C. Allen, and daughter-in-law, Elizabeth, of Lake Ridge, VA; and son (deceased), Michael R. Allen, and daughter-in-law, Mary, of McLean, VA. Carlin was also the proud grandfather of five grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
Memorial services will be held at Quantico National Cemetery on Friday, October 7, 2011, at 12:00 noon. Arrangements by Demaine Funeral Home.

When I went to work for the I.U.D.,Carlin became my mentor and my best friend. We spent thousands of hours just talking and probably the most fun was when we worked togeather on the road. When I used to bring my little girl to the office she used to sit on my desk and on Carlins. He promised her a job when she grew up if she learned to type. Many friends have left us but, Carlin was special.Extra special! My very best to Anne,Hope she is doing well.

Carlin's quiet determination and boundless good humor were inspiring to all who knew him. The first time we played golf together I sensed it was an honor to be in his presence and I was not mistaken.

Dear Annie, my thoughts and prayers go out to you and your family. Carlin was indeed one of the "good guys", it was an honor to know and serve him and you as well at MVCC.

Anne, Bobby,Sharon, Jimmy, Bob, Elizabeth,
Mary and all the grand childres and great grandchildres,
Carlin was one of our favorites-we will miss him. One time I had lunch with him and Mary at the club and I think he talked about how much I liked the soft shell crab sandwich I ate for years to follow. He said, "I have never seen anyone eat something so fast and enjoy it so much"-it was really good!. He enjoyed our funnycards, he would send a note telling us how much he enjoyed our "risque cards". He will be missed. Anne get well soon and our prayers are with you daily. He loved Pat's music.
