2015
Jim was born on December 9, 1943 in Eagle Pass, Texas. He went home to be with his Savior on March 28, 2015. Jim is survived by his mother, Mozelle Pinson, his beloved wife of 37 years, Ethelene, his five children; Lonny Marshall, Sherry (Rick) Johnson, Linda (Joey) Banes, Chris (Sylvia) Marshall, Steve (Lori) Roesel, and 11 grandchildren.
He loved his God, his family, and his country. He joined the United States Navy in 1962 and served on the Aircraft Carrier USS Coral Sea. This is where he was introduced to his life long work as a mechanic. He soon realized that he had a God-given talent to fix any type of machine. His specialty was in diesel engines and heavy equipment. He had a strong work ethic, working long hours in difficult weather conditions day or night. However, he still had time to restore a vintage Mustang and paint it green with metallic shavings. It had to be green because it was his favorite color.
When Jim saw a need, he acted on it. Jim and his dear friend, Ike, began a Car-Care Ministry at Trinity Lutheran Church to help single moms and widows. There was always a line of cars and the youth group would even wash them. He knew first hand of their needs because he had married a single mom with three children years before. He was a family of three and met a family of four and decided we would all be better together. He was right! He had two boys and was a little afraid of raising girls, but he put that fear aside and went with faith. It worked because we all survived and are much better off because of it. He drew strength from his favorite prayer-the Serenity Prayer. The most important thing that he had on this earth was his family. He kept us safe, made us strong, and was present in our lives. Yes, he was that kind of Dad that went to all our games and events. He had a huge heart and always tried to encourage us kids to be and do better.
Jim and his father-in-law, who he admired, had a competition every spring on who could grow the first and the biggest tomato! He had a passion for growing vegetables, even though he was a meat and potato man.
Jim had a wonderful smile and a great laugh, with which you heard often because he loved to "joke around." He also believed that everyman should have a pocket knife on him at all times. After he retired he enjoyed reading and playing chess on the computer. He enjoyed fishing with his favorite buddy Pastor Wagner and always said, "A bad day fishing, is better than a good day at work". He had recently learned to play 88 and had fun playing dominos with his friends.
Jim was a faithful member of Trinity Lutheran Church for 33 Years. He found a new church home five years ago in Our Savior Lutheran and it gave him great joy and many friendships. Also, he was active in promoting Life through several organizations.
He was "Po Po" to his 11 Grandchildren: Amber, Travis, Reagan, Tayler, Trevor, Maxwell, Christopher, Mary, Rebecca, Elizabeth, and Abigail-all who he adored. He enjoyed having them over for every holiday and always cooked something good. Plus, the grandkids got a kick out of him teaching them how to play poker.
This world is a better place because Jim Marshall lived in it for 71 years! With deep and heavy sadness we say good-bye. It is with joy we celebrate his life and have God's promise of eternal life and the assurance we will see him again in Heaven.
