James Way Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Oct. 13, 2016.

Augusta, GA – Called home to his eternal rest by his Lord and Savior on October 12, 2016, James Thomas Way, Sr. was reunited with his beloved wife of 67 years, the late Evelyn Way. Affectionately known as "Big Daddy" by all of his family and friends, Mr. Way's life was truly one dedicated to God, family and country. His early adult years were spent in the military, serving his country in the US Army. Shortly after joining the Army, he was quickly deployed to Europe during WWII. He was among the thousands of young men who landed on Omaha Beach and spent the next 4 years on European soil fighting the war. He decided to make a career in the Army, serving his country in Japan, Germany and several installations across the US until he retired as a SFC in 1964. He never passed an American flag without commenting that there was nothing more beautiful than the flag, especially if the wind was blowing and the flag was waving.
After his military retirement, he owned and operated Way's Service Station and Radiator Shop. He was a loving and devoted husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather who enjoyed having his family gathered together as often as possible. He loved fishing and boating at his Clark Hill Lake house then traded that life style to traveling around the US in his RV with his wife Evelyn.
Mr. Way was a member of Silvercrest Baptist Church and enjoyed reading and hearing the teachings of God's word. He also loved to listen to the "old timey" Gospel music.
Left to cherish his memory are his daughter Sandra Tanner (Bob) and son James Thomas Way, Jr (Mary); grandchildren Ron Hunter, Doug Hunter, Josh Way, Jake Way, Alice Querin; great-grandchildren Austin Hunter, Ashlyn Hunter, Maddie Hunter, Blake Hunter, Rachel Hunter, Riley Hunter, Laura Patton Way, Ellis Way, J.T. Way, Oliver Way, Beckett Way, Asher Way, and Avett Way and special nephews Leland (Buddy) Powell, Johnny McGrath, and Donnie Way.
The family will receive friends on Sunday, October 16, 2016 from 6:00-8:00pm at Elliott Sons Funeral Home, 2524 Lumpkin Rd., Augusta, GA. The funeral service will be held on Monday, October 17, 2016 at 12:00pm at Elliott Sons Funeral Home Chapel. Burial with military honors will follow at Hillcrest Memorial Park.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to MSA Hospice, 4314 Belair Frontage Rd, Augusta, GA 30909.
