James H. Atwell, 87, of Matthews, died May 3, 2014, at the Missouri Delta Medical Center in Sikeston. Born July 27, 1926, in Strang, Okla., to the late Roy and Bessie Templeton Atwell, he had worked in agriculture as a grain elevator operator. He was a member of the Missionary Baptist Church in Matthews, where he also served as a Deacon. On October 30, 1948, in Piggott, Ark., he married Juanita Ellen Stephens, who preceded him in death on September 18, 2012. Survivors include: one son and daughter-in-law, Ronald and Anne Atwell of Verona; three daughters and two sons-in-law, Cheryl Atwell of Matthews, Linda and Wayne Gremard of...

Born July 27, 1926, in Strang, Okla., to the late Roy and Bessie Templeton Atwell, he had worked in agriculture as a grain elevator operator. He was a member of the Missionary Baptist Church in Matthews, where he also served as a Deacon. Survivors include: one son and daughter-in-law, Ronald and Anne Atwell of Verona; three daughters and two sons-in-law, Cheryl Atwell of Matthews, Linda and Wayne Gremard of Sikeston and Tina Goodland and Bill Cranman of Palm Harbor, Fla.; four grandchildren and ten great grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by one brother, Harold Atwell, and one sister, Geraldine Pendleton.
Visitation will be held Thursday, May 8, beginning at 11 a.m. until time of the funeral service at 1 p.m. at the Nunnelee Funeral Chapel, with Rev. Chris Polk, officiating.
Burial will follow in the Garden of Memories Cemetery in Sikeston.
