On May 9, 2014 James J. Casper, Sr. passed away peacefully after a courageous battle with prostate cancer. Jim was born on February 8, 1938 and grew up in Lansing, MI. His parents were Beatrice and Joseph Casper. Jim graduated from St. Mary High School in 1955 and Aquinas College in 1959. Jim earned his Master's degree in education at MSU. He was a teacher at St. Casimir Grade School and O'Rafferty High School after he completed college.
He left the teaching profession and worked at 3-M Company before starting The Casper Corporation, specializing in High Density storage systems.
Upon retiring, he followed his passion and became an artist. His work can be found in Cross Village, MI at 3 Pines Studio. Jim was one of the co-founders of the Three Village Arts, a plein air painting group. He treasured his summer home in Harbor Springs, MI for 35 years. He enjoyed many friends in Harbor Springs, especially his coffee buddies where they met every morning at the Island Bean Coffee Shop where all the problems of the world were solved.
Many a summer afternoon you could find him in his backyard in Harbor Springs with a paint brush in one hand and a cigar in the other. He is now in heaven free of pain and painting with the Masters. Jim was a member of the Country Club of Lansing where he served on the board of governors. He enjoyed many good times there with family and friends. He was also a member of the Mackinaw Island Yacht Club. Jim enjoyed the MSU Spartans and the Detroit Tigers.
He was a member of St. Thomas Aquinas Parish in East Lansing and Holy Childhood of Jesus Church in Harbor Springs.
Jim is survived by his loving wife, Fran, of 53 years. They were high school sweethearts and never left each other's side during that time. He is also survived by his daughter, Lori (Phillip) Reuben and his son, Jim Jr. (Angela) Casper. His grandchildren, Jimmy III, Smith Thomas, and Tatum Elizabeth Casper were the light of his life, and he enjoyed passing his art skills to them. Also surviving are one sister, Judy Raymond and many nieces, nephews and cousins.
