Obituary

James Edward Frank, "Jim", professor by day, organic gardener, birder, hiker and amateur geologist (amongst other self-taught pursuits) for the rest of his free time, passed away on January 30, 2014. James Edward Frank, "Jim", professor by day, organic gardener, birder, hiker and amateur geologist (amongst other self-taught pursuits) for the rest of his free time, passed away on January 30, 2014.
Born in Elizabeth, NJ to Helen and Constant, his childhood was spent with his two older siblings: Charlotte and Robert (Bob) delivering milk to earn money, spending summers at the Jersey Shore (where an unfortunate event with a bucket of crabs was retold for too many years at family get-togethers) and starting the first of many life-long friendships (you know who you are).
Jim's change of heart from electrical engineering to Urban and Regional Planning at Cornell University started him on his journey to become a professor (or as it could be called, a fud, otherwise known as a PhD) and ultimately landed him in Tallahassee, FL where he taught at Florida State University, Department of Urban and Regional Planning.
Although he loved teaching, one would say that Jim was the ultimate life-long learner. The house was always full of books on various topics with little bits of paper sticking out of them (the corners of the pages were never creased) and notes written in margins. But the learning was not limited to books. As evidenced by Jim's vast amount of toys (kayaks, backpacks, tents, binoculars and colorful kites in all shapes and sizes) it was the adventures too numerous to list that showed that hands-on learning was just as important as book learning and created a number of lasting friendships.
Along the way Jim married Marcella Eilbacher and had two children: Terry (married to Rich) and Ed (married to Bernadette). These were among the first initiated to the various Life Long Learning camping trips, one of the highlights of which was the consumption of Pemmican and freeze dried food.
And while the marriage did not last – the learning continued with his partner in life – Carol Bullock. Together they plotted and planned various topics to tackle and learn. This learning was passed on to his grandchildren, who delighted in the fact that Poppy taught them how to make underarm farts in the bathtub, took them kayaking for manatees (which repulsed said grandchildren with their noxious gases-notice a theme here?) and taught them how to photograph birds on their wildlife hikes. A visit to Poppy's was never complete without time spent at Carol's playing on the old Nintendo console.
And although Robert Frost said: "Good fences make good neighbors", in Jim's case, those fences were never an impediment to some of the best talks and friends in his life.
The family would like to thank Big Bend Hospice, the 7th floor staff of TMH and the caregivers from Home Instead for the extraordinary kindnesses they showed Jim.
A life celebration will be held at a later date. In Jim's memory, contributions in lieu of flowers may be sent to: St. Mark's Wildlife Refuge. The donation form can be found here: http://www.stmarksrefuge.org/support.htm
And as his granddaughter Emily says: Not only does he now have the best seat in the house to see all of the birds in the world like he's always dreamed, but he's flying with them now too and looking over all of us.
