James Hewitt Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Feb. 7, 2013.

James "Jimmy" Cass Hewitt, 87, passed away on February 6, 2013 in Houston, Texas following a two month struggle with infection. Jim was a beloved husband, father and grandfather.

He was born on August 24, 1925 in Monroe, Louisiana and grew up in Houston. Jim attended Allen Military Academy in Bryan, Texas from 1938 until his graduation in 1943. He then enlisted in the U.S. Army and served as a corporal in a demolition training unit at Fort Sam Houston during World War II. Following his honorable discharge from the Army in 1945, Jim attended Allen Academy Junior College on a basketball scholarship and also served as a military instructor at Allen Military Academy, until his graduation with an associate degree in 1947.

He then began his career in the oil service industry driving a pump truck for Halliburton. From 1949 to 1955 he worked as a "mud engineer" for Millwhite, Baroid and Magcobar in oil fields throughout East Texas. In 1956 Jim was promoted to a drilling fluid sales representative for Magcobar and in 1965 he went to work for Dresser Security Engineering as a drilling bit sales rep. In 1970 he became the Houston representative for Dallas based Cactus Drilling for whom he worked on oil well drilling projects in West and South Texas. In 1982 he went to work as an executive sales representative for PETCO/Champion Chemicals from whom he retired in 1993.

Jim and his loving wife Frances raised their two children in the Larchmont subdivision in Houston and enjoyed family trips to Galveston. Jim and his second wife, "Babe", resided in the Oxford Condominiums in Houston and enjoyed frequent vacations. For the past year Jim resided at the Terrace at Memorial City retirement community in Houston.

Jim was a long time member of Lakeside Country Club, The Houston Club, The Petroleum Club of Houston and the American Petroleum Institute. He was an avid golfer, playing to a 9 handicap or better for over 25 years. He scored two holes in one and once shot a two under par 70 at the Lakeside golf course. He competed in oil industry golf tournaments throughout the Southwest winning many trophies. In his early work years he organized annual deer/elk hunting trips to Casper, Wyoming and deep sea fishing and duck hunting trips to Aransas Pass, Texas for oil business customers. From the 1960's to early 1980's Jim often spent evenings socializing with oil business clients and fellow Houston Club members in Allen's Landing. He also enjoyed playing cards with friends in the Men's Grill at Lakeside.

Mr. Hewitt was predeceased by his parents, Earl Vincent Hewitt and Annie Gray Hewitt; by wife, Frances Lee Paskett Hewitt, with whom he was married from 1952 until her death in 1992; and, by his second wife, Irene "Babe" P. Hewitt, with whom he was married from 1994 until her death in 2010. He is survived by his son, James Vincent Hewitt, of Galveston, Texas; his daughter, Kimberly Anne Wakie, and her husband, Arthur Joseph Wakie, of Magnolia, Texas; granddaughter, Whitney Alison Keene, and her husband, Andrew Keene, of Houston; grandson, Matthew Hewitt Wakie of Midland, Texas; his sister, Annie Laurie "Sister" Denhert of Houston; niece, Laurie Gray Denhert of Houston; niece, Myna Ruth Letlow and her husband, Casey Letlow of Houston; and, grandnephew, Cole Letlow; as well as, many nieces and nephews from his wife Frances' side of the family.

Jim's children would like to thank Drs. Patrick J. Cook, John V. Seger, and Garth A. Beinart for the excellent healthcare they gave their father. Mr. Hewitt's children also express their gratitude for the thoughtful care given to their father during his final illness by medical personnel at the 7 South 2 ICU and the Palliative Care Team at St. Luke's Episcopal Hospital and the Houston Hospice in the Houston Medical Center.
