James J. Hines, Educator, 86, of Fairview Heights, Illinois, Born May 17, 1926, in St. Louis, Missouri, died Monday, May 6, 2013, at home.
James was a member of St. Albert's Catholic Church, now Holy Trinity, in Fairview Heights, Illinois, for the past 35 years. He served as a lector, was active in the Renew Program, and was a member of the Knights of Columbus. Over the years, he enjoyed attending Bible study classes, and Charismatic prayer services. Jim served as the Salvation Army Board Chairman from 1985-1987. He supported HUM (Hines Ugandan Ministries) of which his daughter, Katherine, is a Missionary. James proudly served his country in the United States Army, during both WWII and the Korean Conflict. He was also a member of the Fairview Heights, VFW Post 8677.
James received a Bachelor of Science degree in Education, 1950, from Southwest Missouri State; Advanced Certificate in Education from the University of Illinois, 1961; Master of Arts degree in Education, 1971, from Washington University; and a Master of Arts Degree in Management, 1986, from Webster University. He also held the title of RSBA, Registered School Business Administrator. He served as President of the Illinois Association of Community College Business Administrator, 1980. James received the Illinois Association of Community College Chief Financial Officers Award for service in 1986.
James started his teaching career in Steelville, Missouri, served as Superintendent of Schools, in Bellflower and Silex, Missouri. Then moved to Kankakee, Ill., where he was Assistant Superintendent over 15 schools, for 13 years; then served for 8 years as Vice President for Administration at Joliet Junior College; then finally served as Vice President at Belleville Area College, now SWIC. He was chosen as Outstanding Administrator in 1982.
During his lifetime, James was an avid jogger and swimmer. He often stated that his greatest accomplishment in life was receiving Jesus as his personal Savior at the age of 18.
He was preceded in death by his parents, James Jefferson and Dicy Ellen, nee Bobbitt, Hines; his first wife, Wilma Hines, nee Green; a son, James Richard Hines; a half-brother, Robert Hines; and a great grandson, Neamiah Hines.
Surviving are his wife, Marjorie, nee Banning-Raab, Hines, whom he married December 10, 1977, three sons, Dennis (Jean) Hines, of St. Louis, Missouri; Ron (Eileen) Hines, of Fairview Heights, Ill.; and Gary (Sompit) Hines, of Granite City, Ill.; a daughter, Katherine Hines, of East Africa; his step-children, James Raab, of Fairview Heights, Ill., Angela (Scott) McCracken, of Labadie, Mo, and Jeffery (Dawn) Raab, of Mesa, Ariz.; 13 grandchildren, Govi (Tiffany) Hines, Jared (Sara) Hines, Caleb, Rebekah, and Berea Hines, Zachary (Savannah) Hines, Bethany (Luke) Gerrick, Rachel Hines, Kevin (Danielle) Hines, Ian and Miles McCracken, J.R. and Meghan Raab; and four great grandchildren, Ephraim and Jireh Gerrick, Levi Hines, and Henry River Hines.

Visitation: Friends may call from 4 to 7 p.m., Friday, May 10, 2013, at Lake View Funeral Home, Fairview Heights, Ill., and also from 9 to 10 a.m., Saturday, May 11, 2013, at Holy Trinity Catholic Church, Fairview Heights, Ill. A prayer service will precede the visitation at 4 p.m., Friday at the funeral home.
Funeral: A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10 a.m., Saturday, May 11, 2013, at Holy Trinity Catholic Church, Fairview Heights, Ill., with Father Voss officiating. Interment will follow in Green Mount Catholic Cemetery, Belleville, Illinois.
