Msgt. James Alvin Hopkins, USAF-Retired of Fieldale, died Monday, November 26, 2012, at his home. Born in Henry County on February 8, 1927, he was a son of the late Sanford and Hester Hopkins. Also preceding him in death was his stepmother, Miram Hopkins, a brother, Joseph Lee Hopkins, and an infant daughter, Linda Marie.
James served in the U. S. Army for four years, and the U. S. Air Force for 17 years retiring in 1972. He was a Viet Nam veteran. He was also retired from Henry County Public Schools after working in the transportation department for 16 years. James was of the Baptist faith.
He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Pearl Marie Stowe Hopkins of the home, one daughter, Kathy Hopkins Rogers of Collinsville, two sons, James L. Hopkins of Nathalie, and John A. Hopkins of Fieldale, one brother, Vernon Hopkins of Fieldale, four sisters, Lessie Stone, Velma McGhee and Ann Stowe of Fieldale, and Betty Richardson of Martinsville, one stepsister, Theresa Jarrett of Greensboro, NC, and eight grandchildren, Jamie Hopkins, Jason Hopkins, Heather Hopkins, Kaitlin Rogers, Madison Rogers, Caleb Hopkins, Skyler Hopkins, Zachery Turman.
The funeral service will be held at 11 A.M. Thursday, November 29, 2012, at Collins Funeral Home with the Rev. Roy McVey and the Rev. Tim Wood officiating. Interment will follow in the Hopkins Family Cemetery with full military honors provided by the Seymour Johnson AFB Honor Guard. The family will receive friends Wednesday, from 6 to 7:30 P.M. at the funeral home and at other times at the home.

I am so sorry to hear of your loss. Uncle Alvin was a wonderful man and will be sadly missed by everyone. Our thoughts and prayers are with you.

My sincere sympathy is extended to the Hopkins family. I have very fond memories of spending time with Alvin as a child. I loved it when he would take me for a ride on his motorcycle. He was a great man and true Patriot who served his country well.
