James M. "Jim" Johnston, Colonel U.S. Air Force Retired, 72, of Bartlett, passed away on Thursday, April 10, 2014. He was born in Knoxville, TN. on June 14, 1941 to Madelyn S. and Earl Lavell "Buck" Johnston. Mr. Johnston grew up in Sheffield, AL. and graduated from Sheffield High School in 1959. He went on to college and graduated with a BA in Economics from Rhodes (Southwestern) College in 1963. That same year he joined the U.S. Air Force and went on to serve 26 years at all levels of Command and Operations in Logistics and Distribution. James M. "Jim" Johnston, Colonel U.S. Air Force Retired, 72, of Bartlett, passed away on Thursday, April 10, 2014. He was born in Knoxville, TN. on June 14, 1941 to Madelyn S. and Earl Lavell "Buck" Johnston. Mr. Johnston grew up in Sheffield, AL. and graduated from Sheffield High School in 1959. He went on to college and graduated with a BA in Economics from Rhodes (Southwestern) College in 1963. That same year he joined the U.S. Air Force and went on to serve 26 years at all levels of Command and Operations in Logistics and Distribution. His assignments brought him to Japan, Germany, the Philippines, and the Republic of Vietnam. His awards include the Defense Meritorious Service Medal, Bronze Star, U.S. Air Force Meritorious Service Medal, U.S. Air Force Commendation Medal and numerous others. He was also selected for eight years as one of the top ten USAF Outstanding Supply Officers. In 1990 he retired after serving three years as the Commander of the Defense Logistics Agency Distribution Depot in Memphis, TN. He was preceded in death by his parents and sibling Jerry Richard "Dick" Johnston of Stuttgart AR. Mr. Johnston is survived by his loving wife Cindy A. Johnston, children J. Martin Johnston, Jr. of Colfax, NC., Emily J. Johnson of Arlington, Emily C. Houston and Katie H. Lanier of Greenville, NC., and Walt R. Houston of Bartlett, nine grandchildren Brittany Johnson, Andrew Johnson, Maddie Johnston, Abbey Helton, Ella Helton, Jack Johnston, Corri Houston, Jackson Lanier, and Maggie Lanier, sisters June Johnston Hungarland of Marietta, GA. and sister Janice Johnston Elliott of Greenwood, SC. The family will receive friends and relatives on Monday, April 14 from 5-8pm at Memphis Funeral Home and Memorial Gardens, 3700 N. Germantown Rd. The funeral will be on Tuesday at 3pm also at the funeral home. Memorial contributions can be made to; River Oaks Presbyterian Church, 1665 S.
