James Anthony Lanigan grew up in Detroit, MI and graduated from St. Joseph's High School in 1952. After graduation he joined the US Navy and was stationed in Beeville Texas. After leaving the Navy he started working for Detroit Edison. He worked there for 41 years until his retirement in 1997. While at Edison he started working at the energy plant, went on to reading meters and finally finishing as a District Manager. It is said that reading meters is where he gained his vast knowledge of donut shops and bar locations. He was still in close touch with many of his coworkers until his passing. Upon his retirement he enjoyed his golden years spending time with his loving family and many grand children. One of the nicest things to come about with his retirement was a well deserved trip to Ireland where he had always wanted to visit.
Jim's many interests included bowling, golf, John Wayne movies, travel, racquetball and most of all conversing with people. Many of you remember him from these hobbies as well as the many of other activities/groups he participated in: Meals on Wheels, Ohio bowling trips, sports leagues, crime stoppers, and many other activities.
Jim was always full of life and it showed with the number of friends he accumulated in his 79 years with us. It is a well known fact that there are few places you could go with him where he wouldn't recognize one if not many people. Once you became a part of his life there was no going back. Many of his friends date to his early years and he was still making new ones right up to the end. All of these people will tell you how much they loved having him in their life. As his nephew Tommy said: "If you were fortunate enough to know him, lucky you. If not, you really missed out." Let's celebrate his life by filling everyone in on all the touching and wonderful stories that fill our heart.
