.NORTHPORT | James Adolph Lary, Sr., age 90, of Northport, died April 12, 2014, at Heritage Health Care & Rehab. Family and friends will celebrate his life as a loving husband, father, brother and grandfather during services held at 11 a.m. Monday, April 14, 2014, at Sunset Funeral Home with Dr. John Nixon officiating and Sunset Funeral Home, a Dignity Memorial Provider, directing. Visitation will be one and a half hours prior to the service. Burial will follow at Bethel Presbyterian Church Cemetery. James Lary was born on September 22, 1923 and raised with six brothers on his family's farm near Northport. All seven Lary boys grew up playing sports and learning musical instruments, of which James picked up the fiddle, mandolin, and guitar. Friday nights on the farm with performances by the Lary Boys band were a staple of growing up in the family. It was the dancing that accompanied these shows that earned James the nickname "Woogie." Lary was also a proud veteran of the U.S. Army, having served during World War II as a rifleman in "A" Company, 14th Infantry Regiment of the 1st Armored Division in Italy and with the military police in North Africa. The only thing James Lary loved more than reminiscing about his old war stories was his late wife, Susie Lary. James married his sweetheart, Susie Rushing, in 1946 in Columbus, Mississippi. James worked in watchmaking and repair for over 60 years, beginning with Lary & Waldrop and continuing with Vining's Jewelers, then finally retiring from Bromberg's.He was preceded in death by parents, Mitt and Margaret Lary; wife, Susie Rushing Lary; son, Larry Lary and brothers, Joe, Al, Raymond, Gene, and Ed.Survivors include his son, James A. "Butch" Lary, Jr. of Tuscaloosa; daughter, Sabrina Case (Tom) of Northport; brother Frank Lary (Mary) of Northport; granddaughter, Margaret Little (Michael) of Falls Church, Virginia; grandsons, Lance Lary of Atlanta, Georgia, Lang Lary of Aliceville and Butch Case (fiancé Brittany Holley) of Huntsville.Pallbearers will be Butch Case, Tom Case, Randall McCombs, Joe Lary, Lang Lary, and Michael Little.Honorary Pallbearers are the staff of Heritage Health Care & Rehab, Dr. H. Joseph Fritz, Ray and Sharon Glenn, Liz Dykes, Mike and Cindy Hannah, Jean Lancaster, Brenda and Savannah LaFoy, Rebecca Goosetree, Ted Gryska, and the Schmidt Sunday School class and Charles Sprayberry Sunday School class of Northport Baptist Church. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to Eagles Wings or Northport Baptist Church Benevolence fund.
