Longtime San Angeloan, James H. Lummus, 89, died on Tuesday, January 01, 2013. James was born to D.C. and Dale Lummus on October 1, 1923. He graduated from San Angelo High School and attended San Angelo Junior College prior to joining the United States Army Air Corp, where he excelled in electronics. His World War II military service was spent on Guam, maintaining and repairing airplane radio systems. James and Frances Geraldine (Gerry) Cunningham were married on December 15, 1946. Longtime San Angeloan, James H. Lummus, 89, died on Tuesday, January 01, 2013. James was born to D.C. and Dale Lummus on October 1, 1923. He graduated from San Angelo High School and attended San Angelo Junior College prior to joining the United States Army Air Corp, where he excelled in electronics. His World War II military service was spent on Guam, maintaining and repairing airplane radio systems. James and Frances Geraldine (Gerry) Cunningham were married on December 15, 1946. James established Lummus Auto Supply in 1948. After the Texas Highway Department purchased the Lummus San Angelo property on Caddo Street to make way for Houston Harte Freeway, James used the materials salvaged from the Lummus Auto Supply business site to build Lummus Buildings East and West across Caddo from his original business. He also managed numerous business and home rental properties for many years. James was a longtime member of Emmanuel Episcopal Church, American Legion Post 572 in San Angelo, and the Downtown San Angelo Rotary Club.
James was preceded in death by his parents, his brother, Donald D. Lummus, and his sister, Doris Dorrance McDurmott. He is survived by his wife of 66 years, Frances Geraldine (Gerry) Cunningham Lummus; children: Nickie Lummus Weaver, Jimmie D. and Sara Lummus, all of San Angelo; grandchildren: J. Christopher Weaver of Austin, Carroll C. Weaver and Jason Bottoms of McKinney, Jay M. Lummus of San Angelo, Jon D. and Mandy Lummus of San Angelo, and great grandchild, Carson James Bottoms of McKinney.
Services will be Thursday, January 3rd, at 2:00 PM at Emmanuel Episcopal Church. In lieu of flowers, please send memorials to Emmanuel Episcopal Church or Meals for the Elderly of San Angelo.
The family thanks Baptist Memorials Nursing Center, particularly Sagecrest Alzheimer's Center, for the excellent care and kindnesses shown during James' final illness. Now, he rests with the angels.
