James MacFadzean Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Feb. 17, 2014.

Born December 25, 1932 - Died February 15, 2014
Jim was the only child of James MacFadzean and Rachel Wilson Hamilton, both of Ayrshire, Scotland.
Happiness for Jim was the companionship of his beloved wife and best friend Katherine McCallum, with whom he shared many joys and interests including extensive overseas travel and a wide appreciation of classical music.
From a previous marriage to Wendy, Jim was the father of three wonderful children - Monica, Peter (Joanna), Matthew (Natalie). He was the proud grandfather of Clea, Torin, Duggan, Eamonn, and Robin.
For a number of years, Jim served as Secretary of the Investment Dealers Association of Canada before becoming founder and President of the Round Table Club of Toronto, a highly regarded public affairs forum.
He had a lifetime interest in spirituality and, as a masters student, found time to obtain a diploma in Theology from Trinity College, Toronto, where he met Katherine, and a Masters of Arts degree in spirituality from Regis College, Toronto.
A service will be held at The Cathedral Church of All Saints in Halifax on Wednesday February 19th at 2:00pm followed by a reception for family and friends. In lieu of flowers, donations to Symphony Nova Scotia or to The Victorian Order of Nurses, Halifax branch, would be much appreciated. His family wishes to extend their deepest gratitude to Joanne Lamb and Jessie Meredith of the VON, and also to the staff of the palliative care unit of the Victoria General Hospital who gave him such gentle and loving attention.

Please accept my deepest sympathy. Jim was a good man, and I enjoyed my many conversations with him during the Round Table sessions. I have thought of him often since then and am so sorry to learn he has passed.

Although not having seen Jim in recent years, he and I go back many years. He was the equivalent of "best man" at my marriage to Deborah in the late 1980's.

Having been away, I learned of his passing late. My sincerest sympathy to Katherine and to his children and grandchildren.

Loving condolences dear Kathy. This is such sad news. No words can ease your grief. Jim was a dear man, so much fun; I enjoyed knowing him however briefly. We are thinking of you both, with prayers and blessings, Thelma and family.

Dear Katherine: Lenora and I were so sorry to learn of Jim's passing. He and I went back a long way -- 30 years at least. What started out as a business connection became a real friendship. I think I became one of his confidants during the Round Table years. He had a great organizational touch and a sharp eye for topical subjects and the people who would be good speakers. The fact that he was able to lure top figures from the political and business worlds to speak to a small (and we thought elite) group is clear evidence of his winning personality, his stature and his credibility. He was a warm friend to me, and it was wonderful to see how settled and contented he became when he met and married you. His devotion to and pride in his children was also impressive. Lenora and I have spoken of you and Jim often over the years, and have warm memories of wonderful evenings at your homes in Toronto and in Halifax. Apart from the time in Halifax, we never seemed to be in the same city at the same time, but we often thought of you. Please pass our condolences on to Jim's children -- Matthew and our daughter Mary Ellen have crossed paths in the theater world in years past.

A good man and a good friend -- we are happy to have known Jim -- and you.

Lenora and I send our heartfelt sympathy.

Sincerely, Ed Mahoney
