James (Jim) Ray Modlin went to be with the Lord after passing away suddenly on September 20, 2012, at the age of 64. Jim was surrounded by family and friends who loved him and will miss his sweet and loving disposition.

He was preceded in death by his "Mom", Ruby T. Modlin, who raised him in a loving and nurturing home; and by his father, Henry R. Modlin, Jr.

He is survived by his sister Su Modlin Johnson (Terry-"brother in life"), brother Will Hughes, and an uncle, Philip Modlin, Alexandria, Va; Aunts, Kay Hill, Jamestown, NC and Miriam Taylor, Ga., and many cousins.

A Memorial Service will be held on Thursday, September 27, 2012, at 7:00 pm at the Hanes-Lineberry Funeral Home Sedgefield Chapel located at 6000 High Point Road in Greensboro, NC. Following the Memorial Service the family will receive friends.

Jim was a lifelong resident of Jamestown, NC. He attended Ragsdale High School where he excelled in academics and sports, especially basketball. He was senior class President and had the third highest grade point average. As Co-Captain of the basketball team he was honored by the Greensboro News and Record as an All Conference Award Winner. He attended ECU where he was the Co-Captain of the basketball team and was voted on the Southern Conference Basketball team. Several of his records still stand. Jim always had a love of his two schools. He played professional basketball for the Pittsburg Condors for several years until a knee injury took him away from the game he loved so much. Sports taught him many life skills, such as, leadership, how to be a team player, and the importance of "people".

Jim had an extensive career as fitness professional. His first position was with his dedicated friends, Ben and Rick at Fitness Today. Jim's last position in the business was as Fitness Professional with Sportcenter Athletic Club. He loved his job, and was always happy to go to the club. He never had a negative word about his position, even when working Thanksgiving or Christmas. Jim was popular at the gyms and knew the names of members; he always treated them like "family".

Jim was a Sports Reporter for his good friend, Dusty Dunn. He worked mornings on the Dusty Dunn Radio Show until Dusty retired. Jim also worked closely with lifelong friend, Andy Durham, where they served as the voice of the Greensboro Grasshopper's Baseball Team. They also worked together on announcing the area high school games, all sports. Andy and he would travel across the state to ensure that the area residents were aware of the local teams and their outcomes of the games. Andy and he also worked on the Greensboro Sports.com.

His family was his life, and the loss of his "Mom" was so very hard for Jim. He was able to fill the void with his sports, and sports was always was in every aspect of his life. He was a loyal attendee at the Immaculate Heart of Mary, High Point, NC. Jim found the Lord as his savior, and the gates of heaven will be opened wide for him.
He is now "calling sports in the big stadium in the sky". God bless Jimmy.

The family would like to thank the nurses and the physicians on the CCU for their expert care to Jim, and the love and support they gave to Jim's family and friends.
