James Horald Pope April 16, 1921-October 26, 2013 Smiths Station, Alabama- James Horald Pope, age 92, resident of Smiths Station, Alabama, died on Saturday, October 26, 2013 at St. Francis Hospital. Funeral services are scheduled at the Chapel of Striffler-Hamby, Columbus, 4071 Macon Road, Columbus on Tuesday, October 29, 2013, 11 a.m. with Reverend (Dr.) Geoffrey Hammond officiating. Interment will follow at Parkhill Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the funeral home one hour prior to the service. Smiths Station, Alabama- James Horald Pope, age 92, resident of Smiths Station, Alabama, died on Saturday, October 26, 2013 at St. Francis Hospital. Funeral services are scheduled at the Chapel of Striffler-Hamby, Columbus, 4071 Macon Road, Columbus on Tuesday, October 29, 2013, 11 a.m. with Reverend (Dr.) Geoffrey Hammond officiating. Interment will follow at Parkhill Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the funeral home one hour prior to the service.

Mr. Pope, son of the late John Leon Pope and Daisy Lee Armstrong Pope, was born April 16, 1921 in Houston County, Alabama. He was a 1938 graduate of Columbus High School. Mr. Pope later graduated from Auburn University with a B.S. degree in Accounting and Finance in 1966. He also achieved his Bachelor of Laws degree from LaSalle University, Chicago, Illinois. Following training at West Point, Mr. Pope served his country as an officer in the United States Army during WWII in the South Pacific and later saw combat in the Korean Conflict.

He spent his working years with the Pure Oil Co., Trust Company Bank of Columbus as the banks auditor, and retired from AFLAC in 1991 where he served as the Special Administrative Assistant to John and Paul Amos.
He was a member of Wynnbrook Baptist Church and the Adult Men's Sunday School Class.

Mr. Pope was preceded in death by his wife Ethel Raines Pope. He is survived by his devoted wife of 12 years, Eloise C. Pope; his daughter, Judith Pope Davis; son-in-law, Al W. Davis III of Panama City Beach, Florida; grandsons, Bradley Pope Davis, Averett Waddell Davis, his wife Leigh and great-grandsons, Crieghton Pope Davis and Averett Waddell Davis, Jr. His extended family includes Eloise's two daughters, Joni Johns, her husband Keith and Karen Bullock of Columbus.

Mr. Pope enjoyed traveling and when not traveling, could be found in his beloved flower garden at his home in Lee County on Lake Oliver where he had resided since retiring.
