Chesapeake - James Edward "Jimmy" Powell, 87, passed away March 25, 2014. Mr. Powell was born Nov. 15, 1926 on the Eastern Shore in Onancock, VA. He proudly served his country in the U.S. Navy during World War II in the Atlantic and Pacific Theatres. Mr. Powell was employed by Crockin – Levy Furniture in Norfolk and American Furniture in Albuquerque, NM. After retiring he worked for Haynes Furniture at The DUMP and worked at Smith & Williams Funeral Home as a funeral assistant. Chesapeake - James Edward "Jimmy" Powell, 87, passed away March 25, 2014. Mr. Powell was born Nov. 15, 1926 on the Eastern Shore in Onancock, VA. He proudly served his country in the U.S. Navy during World War II in the Atlantic and Pacific Theatres. Mr. Powell was employed by Crockin – Levy Furniture in Norfolk and American Furniture in Albuquerque, NM. After retiring he worked for Haynes Furniture at The DUMP and worked at Smith & Williams Funeral Home as a funeral assistant.

Mr. Powell was a member of Mesa Masonic Lodge #68 in NM, Portsmouth Scottish Rite 32 °, Khedive Temple of Chesapeake, Chesapeake Shrine Club of Khedive Temple, and VFW #4809.

Mr. Powell was one of William T. Powell Sr. and Ethel Belote Powell's eight children. He is preceded in death by his father; mother; brothers, R. Jack Powell, William T. "Bill" Powell Jr., Jerry T. Powell, and George D. Powell Sr.; and sisters, Betty Ann Powell, and Peggy Powell Parker.

Left to cherish his memory are his loving wife of 66 years, Jean Hanbury Powell, daughter, Michele Powell Hartley and her husband Robert "Bob"; son, Kirk James Powell and his wife Andrea; grandsons, Justin Clay Hartley and Zachary Parker; granddaughter, Kylie Marie Powell; his only surviving sibling, Daniel W. Powell; and numerous nieces, nephews and extended family.

A memorial service will be held at 2:00 p.m., Sunday, March 30, 2014 at Smith & Williams Funeral Home, Kempsville Chapel. You may offer condolences to the family at www.smithandwilliamskempsville.com.
