James (Jim) Riddelle Jr., 83, of Vancouver passed away peacefully on Saturday, April 19, 2014, with family at his side. He was born to James Sr. and Beulah Riddelle on March 23, 1931 in Alexandria, VA.

Jim worked as an apprentice electrician and volunteer firefighter before beginning his long-term career with United Airlines. Jim worked for United Airlines for 42 years, initially with Capital Airlines at Washington DC's National Airport. After Capital merged with United, Jim continued at Washington National, progressively transferring to Norfolk VA, Omaha NE, and finally Portland OR (PDX). Jim and his wife Sharon moved to Vancouver WA in 1990.

Jim took great pride in travelling with his family, taking many trips to exciting places including Britain, Switzerland, Kenya, Tahiti, Alaska, Norway, and multiple trips to Hawaii. He is also remembered for being endlessly patient, extremely generous with his time and skills, and his never-failing punctuality.

Always a prankster, Jim is remembered for his playful teasing and quick wit. He practiced and preached "don't take yourself too seriously", epitomized by his alter ego of many years, the clown named "Hi Pockets". Jim began his clowning career as a member of Clown Alley 147 in Omaha NE, and continued clowning after his move to Vancouver WA. Hi Pockets performed at countless birthday parties, community events, children's hospitals, and charity occasions including PDX's Fantasy Flight. This combined Jim's love of making people laugh and his desire to volunteer.

Jim continued to be active after retirement in 1993, volunteering at PDX airport, the United Airlines Retirees program, Habitat for Humanity, serving lunch at Share House, delivering mail at Legacy Salmon Creek Medical Center, and working with Vancouver's Community Emergency Response Team (CERT).

Jim is survived by his children and their spouses, Jeffrey (Cheryl) Riddelle of Richland WA, Michael (Dawn) Riddelle of Kresgeville PA, and Kathryn (Mark) Spencer of San Diego CA; grandchildren, James, Paige, and Kendall; and his loving partner, Dreenali Krueger. He is preceded in death by his wife, Sharon Riddelle; and sisters, Hazel Hammond and Kathryn Coleman.

A memorial service for Jim will be 2:00 PM, Sunday, April 27th at First United Methodist Church, 401 E. 33rd St., Vancouver, WA 98663.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be given in Jim's name to Hospice Southwest, PO Box 1600, Vancouver, WA 98668.
