James H. Smith June 22, 1946 – March 30, 2014 Jim was born at the Oxford Store in Oxford, Colorado. Jim graduated from Ignacio High School in 1964. After spending a couple of years exercising race horses in Durango he enlisted in the Army and flew Cobra Helicopters in Viet Nam. He received several honors, including a Distinguish Flying Cross, for his service in Viet Nam. Jim was Exalted Ruler at the Farmington Elks Lodge from 1996 to 1997. He received All State Inter Guard in 1994. Jim was born at the Oxford Store in Oxford, Colorado.
Jim graduated from Ignacio High School in 1964. After spending a couple of years exercising race horses in Durango he enlisted in the Army and flew Cobra Helicopters in Viet Nam. He received several honors, including a Distinguish Flying Cross, for his service in Viet Nam. Jim was Exalted Ruler at the Farmington Elks Lodge from 1996 to 1997. He received All State Inter Guard in 1994.
Jim is survived by his wife of 26 years, Donna; daughter, Storme Smith; step-son, Dax Lujan and wife Katie; grandson, Riker Lujan; sisters Shirley Martin; and Bonnie Cummins. He has numerous nephews and cousins.
He was preceded in death by both of his parents and two brothers.
Jim had become an animal activist and supported Doberman rescue groups as well as other animal rescue groups. It had been his plan to make part of his place in Odessa, Texas a refuge for horses.
Jim was a generous, family-loving, patriotic, man. One of his favorite things to do was take his family to the PBR finals in Las Vegas every October.
Services will be at the Farmington, NM Elks Lodge, Saturday, April 5, 2014 at 1:30 pm.
