James Tarleton Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Apr. 29, 2013.

James Franklin Tarleton, 64, of Raleigh, NC, passed on April 28, 2013, surrounded, by his loving family at WakeMed Hospital in Raleigh due to complications from a car accident and a heroic battle with cancer. Born in Raleigh in 1948, Jim was the son of Curtis Franklin Tarleton and Mary Kate Kornegay Tarleton. He graduated from Broughton High School in 1967 and earned the status of Eagle Scout. He then graduated from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 1972, following enlistment in the U. S. Army National Guard.

Jim began his practice as a certified public accountant with Cherry, Bekaert & Holland in Raleigh and then Hilton Head Island before returning to Raleigh, where he operated his own accounting practice, and became part owner and treasurer of Elk Electric, Inc. In his later career, Jim worked as director and consultant with Ivy House Publishing Group, and as one of the developers of Windmill Pointe in Oriental, NC. He was also an active member of the Rotary Club of Capital City.

Jim enjoyed spending long weekends at Ocean Isle Beach in the house he shared with his wife, Judith Ann Livernois. These peaceful weekends were always accompanied by their dear companions – Maverick, Libbit, and Sydney. The time was filled with the elements of life that Jim so enjoyed; the food that he cooked, the crossword puzzles that he completed, the sun light and ocean breeze that he absorbed, and the pelicans that completed his view.

In addition to his loving wife and best friend, Judi, Jim is survived by two sons: John Morgan Blair Tarleton of Astoria, NY; and Matthew James Lee Tarleton and his fiancé, Amy Fay Stinson, of Atlanta, GA; a brother, Allan Ray Tarleton and wife, Donna DiPrisco Tarleton, of Asheville, NC; nephew, Penn Merriman Tarleton, of Asheville, NC; a brother-in-law Raymond Livernois, Jr and wife Helena Livernois, of Charlestown, RI, and several nieces. Jim is also survived by many wonderful and supportive friends that frequently gathered at CWC's in Raleigh and Sharky's in Ocean Isle. His impact will be felt by the many strangers, friends, and family that he made smile on a daily basis. Jim and his family thank his friends and health care providers for the care and support they afforded.

The family will receive friends at Brown Wynne Funeral Home on St. Mary's Street in Raleigh, Wednesday from 6:00 to 8:00 PM. A memorial service will be held on the beach at Ocean Isle on Saturday, May 4th.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Neuse River Golden Retriever Rescue, Paws-Ability, the ASPCA, or the American Cancer Society.

Dear Judi and family,
It was truly an honor and a pleasure to have the opportunity to work with Jim at Ivy House and also to know him as a friend. When my husband, Bob, was diagnosed with cancer about one month after Jim's diagnosis, we realized they had the same team of doctors at Rex Hospital. We would regularly compare notes and progress of their treatment. It is so sad that they are both gone now. It seems to me that the world would be a much better place if they were both still here. May God bless you and your family now and always. I will always remember Jim fondly.

I knew Jim for the past several years now, through working with him at Ivy House. The last words spoken from him were in an email after I found out about his illness. I told him that my thoughts and prayers were with him, and he said to me "You are a true friend." Dear Jim, you were the true friend, and I will miss you dearly. Condolences to his family. Judi, John, and Matthew,
My heart is with you now and forever, this is very hard. Jim was an amazing man with an infectious smile and laugh, a gleam in his eyes, and a heart of gold. He was patient and loving and had a special way of show people how much they meant to him. I was one of many lucky people to have known and loved JT.

Jim was a great friend and business partner...always helping others whether personally or professionally. I cannot count the number of good recipes we shared. We were always talking about southern cooking. His family, pets, and the beach were very important to him. My heartfelt sympathy to his entire family. He was a delightful one-of-a-kind.
