James Washburn Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on May 23, 2015.

Long time Douglasville resident, James B. (Jim) Washburn, age 73, died early in the morning on Saturday, May 23, 2015. Jim was born in Macomb, Illinois, in 1942, the son of Dennie D. Washburn and Loidell (Clifton) Washburn of Augusta, Illinois, both now deceased.

He is survived by his wife, Marjorie Jane (Ashmore) Washburn; two daughters: Cherie Dawn Hall, wife of David Ray Hall, and Tara LeBlanc, wife of Beau A. LeBlanc. Also survived by two granddaughters: Kayla LeBlanc and Lauren Hall; a grandson, Carson Hall; a nephew, Todd G. Spillers; Todd’s daughters: Natasha Rice and Cristy Lee Spillers, and Natasha’s two children.

Jim married Marjorie Jane in 1971, following a three year stint in the US Marine Corps. He was employed by Bellsouth and then by AT&T as a marketing representative, from which he retired. He was an avid Ham radio operator, having begun the hobby in his early teens. His call sign was K4GYH (K4 “Great Yankee Ham”). Jim and his wife were members of the Prince of Peace Lutheran Church in Douglasville.

Jim had a magnetic personality, was liked by all who knew him and made friends easily. He will be greatly missed by all his loved ones. Prayers for his family will be appreciated.

Visitation is Monday, May 25, 2015, from 3 to 6 pm, and graveside services are at Rose Haven Cemetery, Tuesday, May 26, at 3 pm.

Family is requesting that in lieu of flowers, donations be sent to Marines Toys for Tots, in Jim’s name.

I was deeply saddened to hear of Jim,s passing. He was a wonderful person and such a joy to work with. I have thought of him often as we go about our daily work at the phone company. I know he will be greatly missed. My thoughts and prayers are with your family.

Jim's uniqueness in the form of his smarts and wittiness always bring a smile to all of his colleagues at AT&T. We "AE's" even enjoyed it when he would give us a hard time for being 'slow to get it'. God's peace and blessings to all of Jim's family and friends.

When I started with AT&T, I had the opportunity to work with Jim for several years. He was a wealth of experience, knowledge and contacts. I am grateful for the time he took to help with questions and provide direction. You never forget those things and since that time, I try to pass along that same kind of help to others. Keeping you in thoughts and prayers.

The last 9 days have been very hard on all of us. Jim Washburn has been a very close ham radio friend for a couple of years. I miss him so so much. When Jim was on the air with us, it was a big fun party. I have been in ham radio for 50 years. I have never met anyone during that time that loved ham radio and his radio buddies as much as K4GYH. God speed Jim. I will never forget you.

I never had the pleasure of meeting Jim but I did talk with him alot on the radio. A straight arrow he would say and I will never forget him and the impression that he has left on me.
He was easy to like and right now he is giving that distinctive laugh and talking on the radio from Heaven about his ACME products.
My condolences to those left behind but take comfort in knowing that he will be waiting.
Thanks Jim, it was short but ooh soo sweet and you will be missed

The Old buzzard

The old buzzard flies high towards the sun,
the worries of the world left behind the patriotic colors he wouldn't let run.
He rides the radio waves to see his kin,
leaving behind happiness wherever he's been.
A legacy of love he honorably protected,
not one of his babies left rejected.
He lands on the gleaming gates to guard and wait,
preparing the way for his sweetheart knowing shes always late.
Semper-fi, he yells as he looks down upon us some more,
"you'll save 30 cents if you buy the milk at that store."
And we hear his voice in our heads, the lessons he gave,
his loved ones know he's the rock the one to talk to when they needed a save.
His words echo timelessly through air and sea,
" roger that, this is K4GYH, I'm out of the sandbox for good, 73"

I was a grade school/high school classmate of "Jimmy Bill" (8 boys, 9 girls) in Augusta, Ill, population 850.. He was (then) 6 feet tall which made him our default center of the good ole' Augusta Community High School basketball team. Other than farming, there wasn't a lot to hold kids in that immediate area but the childhood experiences we all had, er, created, have stuck with us through the years. Being a HAM operator in his teen years was Jim's way to start expanding his world. I'm so glad Dawn tracked me down through one of my other 7 male classmates! Marjorie, he was/is a good man!
